Storming the Floor:
You can see my photos from the first session at Greensboro below. Here is the second batch.
My favorite cheerleaders of the day (dance squad is a different story) and a very patriotic gopher salute the flag during the national anthem, and the evening session was underway.
Texas had the best dance team of the day. Chaps are always a nice touch. As you can see, one of Tubby's assistant coaches can't even keep his head in the game at this moment.
I really, really enjoyed big Dexter Pittman in this one. During dead balls, he was constantly walking into Iverson like he's doing here - subtly intimidating him with his hugeness. And one time when Minnesota was bringing the ball up the court, he set a devastating back-court pick on a guard who wasn't looking where he was going. Gopher dude just crumbled.
I got a chance to meet our ACC correspondent Matt Cornelius, AKA CornDogg. He also co-founded Hardwood Paroxysm. His girlfriend Sadie is obviously a huge Longhorns fan. I especially loved the burnt orange bracelet. And Matt, despite his orange Durham Bulls cap, is a lifelong Duke fan. So, bear witness to their last moments of March harmony.
Exhibit A why people hate Duke. Not pictured: the male sexagenarian lifetime companions who stood and cheered (with coordinated hand gestures) every five minutes or so.
Big schools get a whole flag squad that spells out their name. Binghamton had to make do with Thing 1 (or is it Thing 2?) waving a solo bearcat pennant at the Dookies.
Exhibit B. Never has a mascot more embodied his fan base. All swooping his cape and shit.
Coach K exhorts his troops. Not visible: Scheyerface.
This guy confused me. What is his personal ethos here? The consistent excellence of Duke basketball? The consistent suckitude of the Royals? Or the mercenary flip-flopping of Carlos Boozer?
I had a great time at the first round, especially meeting Corn. I'll be back on Saturday for UNC/LSU and Duke/Texas.
