(Disclaimer: Written before Memphis beatdown…ironic) On Wednesday, I was not convinced. I was not convinced the Knicks were the team their record indicated. 5-0? I’ve seen the Knicks go on hot streaks before. So they beat the Heat. Big Whoop. Their shots were falling that night, but they’re not going to fall every night. The offense was still slow, Melo was still taking too many shots, and the Knicks just happened to start the season shooting the ball well. But, in New York, you would have thought they were competing in the Eastern Conference Finals. On television, on the radio, even on the streets people were riding high on these five victories. Five. Not ten, not even seven, five. I thought I may have been the only rational personal in the entire state of New York. Until Thursday. After their comeback win against the Spurs, I freely admit that I could not have been any more wrong about this Knicks team. Photo Credit: Darren Abate/AP This team is different than other Knicks teams of recent memory. For one, they have two new point guards in Raymond Felton and Jason Kidd, two guys who have played above and beyond their expectations so far. Jason Kidd has provided veteran leadership, while Felton has balanced that with his energized, win-hungry mentality that seems to have been contagious. Of course, Mike Woodson has done a great job so far as well. He’s making the game fun for the guys, encouraging them to put in more effort than they previously had, and has seemed to turn a team of high earning superstars, primarily concerned with their own personal stat lines, into a group of guys looking to win basketball games. On this team, it seems as if personal achievements take a backseat to the number in the win column. But aside from personnel changes, this Knicks team has something no Knick has had since the days of Alan Houston. This team has heart. They’ve bought into the team, they’ve bought into Mike Woodson, and it shows. When the Knicks were down by twelve points with seven minutes remaining to a top five team on the road, no one thought they had a chance. In the past, this team would have instantly folded. They would have stopped playing defense, started playing one on one basketball, and collapsed at that moment. Not these Knicks. They truly shocked the basketball world last night, and instead of lying down, they picked it up. Greg Popovich and his team did not know what hit them last night. They looked stunned, shell-shocked at the end of the game. And I, as a Knick fan, could not have been any more proud to see that. I’m excited about this new team; their drive, their players, their coaches, and am ready for what is about to be an unforgettable season. -Geller
