MINNEAPOLIS -- A healing hip injury couldn't stop Timberwolves center Nikola Pekovic from delivering a career-high 18 rebounds in Tuesday's 108-103 victory over Atlanta. Hawks forward Josh Smith's freaky athleticism and shot-blocking couldn't stop Pekovic from delivering the last two of his 25 points that kept the Hawks from coming all the way from a 17-point, second-quarter deficit after they pulled within a single point in the final 77 seconds. Smith was called for goaltending on Pekovic's short jump hook with 52.3 seconds left, a call that gave the Wolves a 104-101 lead from which the Hawks never recovered. Wolves forward Dante Cunningham made sure of that. Cunningham pushed Atlanta away once again when it answered Pekovic's final points with an Al Horford basket that made it 104-103 with 37 seconds left. Cunningham's 18-foot shot from the left wing with 15 seconds left made Minnesota's lead three points and then he stole the ball on Atla...

Timberwolves look to Williams to finally shine

MINNEAPOLIS When the Timberwolves drafted Derrick Williams second overall, the highest-ever pick in franchise history, in June 2011, he was, for a brief moment, the future of the team. All such high draft picks are, by virtue of the number assigned to them and the value it implies, if for no better reason. But with the Timberwolves, that designation didn't last long. Problem...

Hand surgery will sideline Love for 8-10 weeks

Kevin Love will miss eight to 10 weeks after he undergoes surgery on the third and fourth metacarpals on his broken right hand. According to multiple reports, the surgery will take place next week. Love flew to New York Wednesday to consult with Dr. Andy Weiland, a hand specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery who treated him for his past two hand injuries. At the appointment...

Rubio cleared to play back-to-back games

MINNEAPOLIS Ricky Rubio answered the question like there'd never been a doubt. Yes, he said. Yes, he'll be playing in Oklahoma City Wednesday night, tomorrow night, really, when he said it. And tomorrow night implies back-to-back, which is just what the Timberwolves are facing and just what Rubio has heretofore been banned from. "My first back-to-back," he said...

Wolves Monday: Rubio set to return

MINNEAPOLIS Barring some other setback, Ricky Rubio will return to the Timberwolves' lineup on Tuesday against Atlanta. The point guard has missed the past four games with back spasms, but he practiced Monday and said he's ready to go. Nikola Pekovic, who sat for most of the second half of Saturday's game with a left hip strain he sustained Thursday, did not practice...

Cunningham proving to be jack of all trades

MINNEAPOLIS Dante Cunningham is not among the league leaders in steals. Not steals per minute, either. Steals per clutch moment, though if that were a stat, you have to know the forward would be up there. With 15 seconds remaining in the Timberwolves' 108-103 win over Atlanta on Tuesday, Cunningham lurched the ball away from Josh Smith, ensuring a foul, two free throws, and...

Wolves 3-point shooting worst in league

MINNEAPOLIS This is bad. Epically bad, in fact. Ugly bad. Head-shakingly bad. Tied for 21th-worst all-time bad. If you haven't guessed it yet, I'm referring to the Timberwolves' 3-point shooting this season. As a team, they're shooting a collective 30.1 percent from long range, which is a resounding worst in the NBA and, among teams all-time that have attempted more...

Tracy McGrady’s CBA Team Protests Officiating By Leaving The Floor Before The End Of A Game

T-Mac’s Chinese saga has nearly reached a level of weirdness paralleled only by that of JR Smith.  McGrady’s Qingdao Eagles are now 19 games into their season, yet they’ve won just twice.  The constant losing has frustrated Qingdao players and fans alike and has led to such drama as debris being hurled onto the floor, McGrady elbowing a player who taunted him, and now, a...

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Minnesota Timberwolves have been saying all season the playoffs are the goal this year. Now they're banking on it. The Wolves are currently in ninth place in the Western Conference...

Hawks-Timberwolves Preview

Losing Kevin Love to injury leaves a huge hole in the Minnesota Timberwolves' lineup, but coach Rick Adelman can't afford for his team to wait for the All-Star forward to return. Now, it's uncertain when Timberwolves center Nikola Pekovic will be back. Point guard Ricky Rubio, though, is expected to return from his injury on Tuesday night when the host Timberwolves...

Without Adelman, Wolves hold off Hawks

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Timberwolves keep losing players, and Tuesday night, they played without their coach as well. Still they pushed their record back above .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2007, earning a 108-103 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at Target Center. With coach Rick Adelman absent due to what the team called a personal matter, top assistant...
