By JOAN NIESEN FOXSportsNorth.com MINNEAPOLIS The Timberwolves announced Monday that they signed forward Lazar Hayward to fill the open roster spot vacated when the team waived Josh Howard on Dec. 20. Hayward will give the team more flexibility at small forward, where it is sorely lacking after Howard's ACL tear and Chase Budinger's meniscus tear. Hayward was the 30th pick in the 2010 draft, and the Timberwolves acquired him in a draft-night trade with the Wizards. He spent his rookie year in Minnesota, averaging 3.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 10.9 minutes in 42 games. The Timberwolves traded him to Oklahoma City before the 2011-12 season for two future second-round picks, and in his year with the Thunder, Hayward appeared in just 26 games, averaging 1.4 points. He was included in the Oct. 27 deal that sent James Harden to Houston, and the Rockets waived him prior to the start of the season. Hayward attended Marquette University, and he is the school's second all-time leading scorer, with 1,859 career points. Follow Joan Niesen on Twitter.
