MINNEAPOLIS With Alexey Shved, listening is an effort. You're trying so hard to hear him that you forget what he's saying, willing so hard for it to be louder and slower that the words cease to make sense. It's not that Shved doesn't speak English. He does, and pretty well for a player who was born 5,000 miles from Minneapolis and lived in Russia until last month. He understands the language even better. But the shy 23-year-old with the headband and braces is a little nervous, a little in a hurry and a lot soft-spoken. Get him going, and he has plenty to say. He's trying, but for now, it can be too soft to notice. On the court in his first week of training camp, Shved has been impressive. He's taller than most expected, though just as lanky as everyone worried he'd be. He can shoot, though, with precision, and he's already garnering comparisons to Ricky Rubio with his fluid movements. He has a natural gift for passing and a good read on the game. He is...

Derrick Williams’ first year in the NBA was marked with inconsistency. The rookie out of Arizona appeared in every game last season for the Minnesota Timberwolves, but if you made a graph of the minutes he played, it would look like a mountain range. Williams had some brilliant performances, including a 27-point game against the Clippers where he shot 9 for 10 from the field...

Make no mistake, chemistry makes a difference

MINNEAPOLIS In the week and a half since Timberwolves media day, approximately 20,000 words about the team's chemistry and the difference it will make have been beamed across the Internet and plastered throughout newspapers. That's a lot of words about something that's the most vague and intangible element of basketball, and yet we continue to wonder and ask and write...

NBA Breakdown (Northwest Division)

Can the return of Ricky Rubio be enough to carry the Timberwolves far? It’s that time of year again. As a basketball fan, and journalist, NBA season is like Christmas in October. To me, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. With that, it’s time for the NBA breakdown. Over the next week or so I will be breaking down the NBA by division, as well make my predictions based...
