Iverson mug In one of the more controversial careers in Philly sports history, one unreservedly in the "Con" column for Allen Iverson would have to be the drama he created in July of 2002, getting charged with (among other things), criminal trespass, simple assault, terroristic threats and gun offenses. It started on July 3rd when Iverson allegedly threw his wife out of his mansion naked during a fight, and made things much worse the next night by busting into his cousin's apartment with a gun looking for his wife. Some incriminating 911 calls made for a case against AI, and on July 16th, 2002, he turned himself in to the authorities. He was held in custody for 11 hours before released on $10000 bail (albeit not before proving once more that no one, no one takes a good mug shot photo).

"I'm hopeful this thing gets resolved and this kid can move on with his life," then-Sixers coach and Iverson father figure Larry brown said of the whole affair. "He's part of our family and will always be a part of our family." Iverson's legal counsel was confident that The Answer would be able to do just that, as the police found no gun and wer missing other key evidence for prosecution. "'It's laughable," said Philly defense attorney Charles Puerto, Jr. "There's absolutely no possibility of getting convicted." Indeed, the charges against Iverson were dropped by the end of the month after witnesses' testimony appeared to contradict itself, though not after a nationwide media frenzy was launched over the former MVP's increasingly thuggish persona.

It wasn't the last time Iverson would be involved with the law, or in the news, and perhaps marked beginning of the end of the honeymoon period between Philly and The Answer, barely a year after he took them to the NBA finals.
