The Portland Trail Blazers started an overhaul to the team Thursday, firing head coach Nate McMillan and trading away a pair of veteran players.

The dismissal of McMillan came one day after the Blazers absorbed a 42-point beating at the hands of the New York Knicks - the team's seventh loss in nine games.

“Clearly the season to this point has not gone the way we had hoped it would and after talking with Nate we decided it was best to part ways,” team president Larry Miller said in a statement. “I want to personally acknowledge and thank Nate for his many contributions to this franchise and wish him nothing but the best for the future.”

McMillan was in his seventh season with Portland and had guided the team to three consecutive postseason appearances.

Injuries have played a part in the franchise's demise. Greg Oden, drafted No. 1 overall in 2007, hasn't played since December 2009, and All-Star guard Brandon Roy was forced into retirement due to recurring knee injuries.

Assistant coach Caleb Kanales was elevated to interim head coach on a day when the Blazers also traded center Marcus Camby to Houston and forward Gerald Wallace to New Jersey.
