The former Heel player and coach is now going to be a college scout for the PacersIn a piece of news that is both about UNC basketball and the National Basketball Association, from the twitter account of Mike Wells, Pacers beat writer at Indianapolis Star, comes word that…
The Pacers have hired former Notre Dame/UNC etc. coach Matt Doherty as a college scout.
— Mike Wells (@MikeWellsNBA) October 3, 2012

For those of you that do not remember, Doherty was a four year starter under head coach Dean Smith, as well as being part of the 1982 national championship squad, ending his college career with 117 wins to just 21 losses. He was drafted in 1984 by the Cleveland Cavaliers, but never got to play at the next level. He moved on to Wall Street, and then totally switched agenda as he took up coaching the game he had played.
He did ten seasons as an assistant coach, first at Davidson (1989-1992) and then at Kansas (1992-1999) under the tuteledge of now Tar Heel head man Roy Williams. Interesting enough coach Williams began his career in Lawrence the year before Matt Doherty started as an assistant.

His coaching career was definitely not the same as the one he had as a player, and while he was doing decently at his first stop, Notre Dame, amassing a 22 and 15 record in his only season there. However the stops at UNC. where he had a 53-43 record and just 23-25 in the conference, which included the 8 win season in `01-`02 was heart wrenching. He was then replaced by the man he had worked under at Kansas, Roy Williams, a year removed from the awful season.
The other two jobs after, first at Florida Atlantic where in just one season there went 15-13 and then at Southern Methodist (80-109 and 30-68 in ConfUSA), where he only had one winning season out of six, did not go much better for Doherty.
As I do with all present and former Tar Heels, let me wish all the best to Matt Doherty as he begins a new chapter in his basketball career. As usual more information about North Carolina basketball and/or football, teams and players, present and past, make sure to check back often on isportsweb!
