Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry signed on with Under Amour this week, joining the likes of Brandon Jennings, Kemba Walker, and Greivis Vazquez. Stephen Curry gets a feel for the Anatomix Spawn, the shoes he will don this season. Curry, coming off a stellar post-season, garnered a lot of attention with his performance last season. After the All-Star break in which he was snubbed of a spot on the Western Conference’s team, Curry finished only behind LeBron James for highest Wins Above Replacement for the rest of the season. Curry, widely recognized as the NBA’s best shooter, is the biggest name that Under Armour has signed to this point, giving more credibility to a growing brand in the NBA today. Under Armour claimed to be looking for young underdog’s who are ‘next’. Curry, only 25, has always been a bit of an underdog. He went to little-known Davidson College out of high school and eventually led them within a three-point shot of the Final Four. He was then drafted seventh overall by the Golden State Warriors. His adaptability to the NBA’s athleticism and speed was questioned by many, but he’s come through again, becoming one of the top young guards in the league. In that sense, Curry seems to be a perfect fit for the self-proclaimed underdog in Under Armour. This season, Curry will be wearing Under Armour’s Anatomix Spawn but will likely have his own signature shoe out by the end of next season. Under Armour is slowly added reputable faces to their brand name, Brandon Jennings being the biggest name before the Curry signing, but showing the ability to go out and sign a stand up guy like Curry can only help their brand gain reputability and should only open the door for Under Armour to go out and sign even bigger names in the near future. After his recent success, it seems as though Under Armour is the first to really take advantage of the ever-growing superstar that Stephen Curry is becoming.
