Utah Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin is entering the fourth and final year of his contract, and reports out of Salt Lake City say that he is not likely to get a contract extension until his contract expires after this upcoming season.
Via Bill Oram of the Salt Lake Tribune:
The coach, entering his third full season at the helm for the Jazz, is in the final year of his contract and, according to the man who represents him in negotiations with the Jazz, an extension is unlikely. …
Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey said last week that Corbin, whose career record is 87-89, has “performed really well under these circumstances,” but declined to comment on anything related to his contract status. Corbin’s agent, Los Angeles-based Steve Kauffman, said the sides have not begun negotiating an extension.
“I don’t expect anything to be done,” said Kauffman, whose other clients include Jeff Hornacek and Monty Williams.
One thing that is certain is that the Jazz don’t expect Corbin to captain this incredibly young and rebuilding team to a lot of wins this season. They will instead be looking at how does working with the players and developing the talent that they have. As a Jazz fan, I personally think that he has done a really good job as a head coach and simply hasn’t succeeded only due to a lack of talent on his roster. He now has the chance to develop the raw talent he has and eventually turn it into something competitive. On the other hand, if there would be a time to get a new head coach, now might also be the time since the rest of the organization is in complete overhaul. It is entirely possible that if the Jazz front office doesn’t feel like Corbin has done a good enough job at the end of this season that they look for another head coach. However, there aren’t a lot of good head coaches out there, and Corbin is a disciple of Jerry Sloan, which is why the odds he stays with the team long-term remain fairly high.
