The San Antonio Spurs had to play three games in a row without their head coach. Gregg Popovich was out with the flu, but in true Spurs fashion, the team didn’t miss a beat. They won all three games and showed why Coach Pop doesn’t need to necessarily be on the bench to help the team win. His way of thinking is ingrained in everyone, from the players down to every member of the coaching staff. Even more impressive was the fact that the Spurs won without Tim Duncan during that stretch as well. But that’s what is so special about this team. Whether it’s a teammate or a coach, the rest of the Spurs are experts at picking up the slack. After the win against Phoenix, Coach Pop was quick to give credit where it was due. He praised the coaching staff for filling in admirably in his absence and credits the system he’s installed for keeping the Spurs rolling on an eight-game win streak and taking the top overall spot in the NBA. Even though the Spurs will lose a legend when Popovich finally decides to retire, it’s nice to know that his legacy will live on through all that he’s taught to the team. In the second part of the interview, Pop talks about Duncan’s status for tonight’s game against the Charlotte Bobcats. It seems like TD is still questionable, so we can’t be sure when we’ll see him on the floor again.
