Washington Wizards play-by-play man Steve Buckhantz was ecstatic last night when he saw the Wiz’s Trevor Ariza swish a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Washington what Buckhantz thought was a 98-96 win over the visiting Detroit Pistons.
Unfortunately for Buckhantz, and for fans of the Wizards (who have become a semi-legitimate professional basketball team since John Wall’s return), the shot didn’t go in.
It sailed just below the rim and brushed against the net creating the illusion, from certain angles, of a made shot.
It was an honest mistake. And it appears that many Wizards fans also misjudged the shot.
Poor Steve Buckhantz continued raving about what he assumed was an incredible last-second victory even as cameras showed a dejected Ariza shambling toward the locker room, thinking about what could have been.
