Remember when Monta Ellis said that he would “put himself in the same category as D-Wade”? Oh, you don’t? Then watch this video and have a great time laughing to yourself. Look, I like Monta Ellis. He’s a very good NBA talent, but to put yourself in the “same category” as Dwyane Wade might be stretching the truth to it’s breaking point. To be a tier or two below Wade is no shameful accomplishment. The guy is a future hall of fame playe,r and a two-time NBA champion. Wade could end up being considered the 3rd best shooting guard of all time, right behind Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. He carries career averages of 24.7 points per game, 5.1 rebounds per game and 6.1 assists per game, and has won two championships (2006 and 2012) with the Miami Heat. I feel like the comparisons between Wade and Monta Ellis only exist in Monta’s head. Wade seems to have the same opinion on the subject of he and Monta, saying he “chuckled” when he heard what Ellis had to say. This story via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. “I looked at it and I chuckled in a sense, ”Wade said.” But if I’m a bar for somebody, I don’t mind that. Monta is a talented, talented guard. But obviously, I feel my game is a little bit different. I’m not just a scorer. I do everything on the floor, my whole career I’ve done it. That’s where I separate myself from others…” “I look at what Kobe Bryant does. I know I need championships to be where he’s at, to even be in the category with him as a player.” Wade does a great job of staying classy and not trashing Monta for his bold comparison of the two, and Wade is absolutely correct. Monta Ellis is a classic scoring two-guard. If his team is going to win games, it’ll most likely come behind his scoring output. A player like Wade can get things done by scoring, or by deferring and opening things up with his great passing. He was also an above average defending in his prime, although his game has lost a bit of it’s hop. I’d still take an 80% D-Wade over a 100% Monta Ellis.
