So Oak Hill Academy, the tiny Baptist-affiliated private boarding school hidden in the Blue Ridge Mountains, finally found itself an identity in the 1980s. Namely it became a basketball powerhouse. And not just any powerhouse, but a collection of some of the best high school talent in the country. But even after attracting some of the country’s best players, it wouldn’t be until 1993 that Oak Hill hit legendary status.
1993 is when three absolute high school studs took the court for the Warriors: Jerry Stackhouse, Jeff McInnis and Makhtar Ndiaye. Imagine having to game plan against that lineup. All the years and hard work by coach Steve Smith were finally paying off. He no longer had to seek out troubled basketball players. He was getting kids coming to him left and right.
