If anybody wants Wesley Matthews, it’s going to cost them. The Dallas Mavericks are holding out for a first-round pick.

The Dallas Mavericks would reportedly trade veteran Matthews for a first-round pick, league sources told The New York Times’ Marc Stein. He adds that the asking price reflects how highly the Mavericks value his impact on the team’s culture.

But that might be tricky for a couple of reasons. Matthews isn’t exactly explosive on the offensive side of the ball. And already at 31 years old, his defense is less than encouraging.

The Mavs have allowed opponents to score a whopping 111.3 points per 100 possessions with Matthews on the floor; when he takes a seat, the team allows just 95.6 points per 100 possessions.

But here’s where things get even trickier. In a way, these things are sort of out of his control.

It’s hard to separate Matthews’ individual impact from a lineup that features multiple turnstile defenders – from the ancient Nowitzki to greenhorn Dennis Smith Jr. – but the underlying numbers don’t make a compelling case in his favor.

On top of the first-round pick, he might be costly. He’s owed $17.9 million this season, but has a player option for $18.6 million the following season. So, how much are potential NBA suitors willing to take on? We’ll find out in just a couple of week; the trade deadline arrives on Feb. 8.
