The Michigan State Spartans dropped from a possible #2 seed to a #3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Big Ten Tournament semi-final loss to Ohio State hurt them. What’s really more important perhaps than seeding is site placement. The Michigan State Spartans drew Auburn Hills, Michigan for their regional, home of the Detroit Pistons. Obviously this is fantastic for Sparty. All the Michigan State Spartans fans will be right there. Tom Izzo certainly is “Mr. March” as Michigan State is 71-29 in March since 1998-99. Given the strength of the Big Ten this year, these Spartans will be more battle tested than usual. MSU always schedules very tough in the non-conference, and it always makes them ready for March. They take their lumps in November so that they survive and advance into April But Tom Izzo knows how to win in the big dance, he has 6 Final Fours in 13 years- that’s the most in the country. The Michigan State Spartans have the most recent national title of any Big Ten team. And their bracket draw this year has some similarities with that magical 2000 run. This year, as well as that title year of 2000: They played Valparaiso in their first tournament game. The road to the title included 2/3 same locations: Detroit and Indianapolis, both drivable locations for their rabid, often-imbibing fan base. I love hearing the Michigan State fight song in March. It’s so fitting, appropo, exciting. It completes the season; like hearing the Michigan fight song in autumn. Call the Michigan State Spartans battle anthem a March Madness version of a Christmas Carol. And the #1 seed in the Michigan State Spartans Regional? Louisville, the team that bounced them from the tourney last year. Tom Izzo usually does well in revenge rematches. Izzo talked about surviving and advancing in the NCAA Tourney Q. You’ve had teams that have won this tournament, you’ve had teams that have gotten beat and made it to the Final Four. What’s the secret from this point now to next week and getting your team to move on to the next step. TOM IZZO: Well, I think what you do is you harp on little things. I mean, I think what you do, there’s the difference at one-and-done time. You have to somehow find a way to make your guys understand that the mistake at the beginning of the game is the same as the mistake at the end of the game, and you don’t get to make a lot of mistakes when you’re playing good people, unless that team happens to make more than you. But I’d rather wish on what I do than hope that they play worse than we play. One-and-done time, some can handle it, some can’t. Paul M.
