Back in good ole 2005, when the NBA put a new CBA together, the NBA came up with the Allan Houston rule. The Allan Houston Rule was a one time deal that allowed any team the ability to get rid of one player and not have it count against the luxury tax for the following season. This allowed teams to help stay under the new salary cap. If you haven’t figured it out the Knicks used their exemption on, you guessed it, Jerome Williams and that is how the rule got it’s name. Wait! What? Yeah, apparently everyone thought the Knicks were going to get rid of Allan Houston and they jumped the gun with the name.
Even though this rule allows you to cut anyone you want you still have to pay them their full salary. Even if they find another team to take them. That player’s salary just no longer counts against your luxury tax.
It seems as if once this new CBA is agreed upon that the salary cap is going to be lowered. By how much is another question. The fact that it is going to be lowered at all makes me think they could reinstate the Allan Houston Rule one more time. This would allow teams to get below or closer to the salary cap.
As a Warriors fan this would be very exciting. I think we all know what the Warriors should do with the Allan Houston Rule. They need to Waive Andris Biedrins. That would save the Warriors 9 million going into next season. Not only would it allow the Warriors to stay under the cap, whatever it is, but it would also allow them extra money to try and fix some of the problem areas.
All we can do for now is wait and hope they bring back the Allan Houston Rule.
