The Washington Wizards apparently saw enough progress at the end of the season to stick with Randy Wittman as their coach.

Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld announced Monday that Randy Wittman, who replaced Flip Saunders on Jan. 24, will return. Terms of the contract weren’t released.

Wittman guided Washington to an 18-31 record and a strong finish. The Wizards won eight of their final 10 games. He took over after the team’s abysmal 2-15 start under Saunders.

“We are excited to bring Randy back as head coach and give him the opportunity to build on the positive momentum that the team showed under his leadership last season,” Grunfeld said. “We were very pleased with the development of our young players and the commitment to winning he instilled despite taking over the team under difficult circumstances.”

Wittman had been the Wizards’ top assistant since 2009. His previous head-coaching experience included stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“I’m thrilled to be returning to work with these players and this organization,” Wittman said. “I felt that we made significant progress throughout last season and we are all looking forward to having a full summer, training camp and season to continue to improve this team.”
