MINNEAPOLIS They don't really dress like that. Kevin Love promises. On Wednesday, the newest issue of SLAM Magazine appeared on newsstands, featuring the Timberwolves' Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio on its cover. The two, clad in a backwards visor (Love) and a large silver watch (Rubio), are posed in a way that's reminiscent of Kevin Garnett and Stephon Marbury on a cover during the 1997-98 season. Garnett and Marbury's cover read "Showbiz & KG: Marbury and Garnett Rule the World. Imagine That." Love and Rubio's was almost exactly the same: "Showbiz & KL: Rubio & Love Rule el Mundo. Imagine That." It's a bit of stretch, drawing those parallels just yet, but the Timberwolves may just be on a similar road to improvement as were their 1997-98 counterparts."I guess they wanted us to pay homage to those guys that came before us, which makes sense, but we're trying to make our own way now," Love said.Marbury, a guard, averaged 17.7 points and 8.6 rebounds that season, and he was more of a scorer than Rubio is at this early stage in his career. Garnett, a forward, averaged 18.5 points and 9.6 rebounds, stats that pale in comparison to Love's this year. That season, the Timberwolves finished with a 45-37 record and a first-round playoff loss to Seattle, their second consecutive playoff bid since finishing with a 26-56 record in 1995-96.The shoot took a bit of convincing for the two young Timberwolves, Love said. Rubio is hardly "Showbiz" and visors might not be Love's thing, but the two had fun with the shoot."That's not really us, but it still looks good," Love said.So though it might be a bit contrived, the cover was no doubt an honor for the two, especially for Love, who read SLAM as a kid and still does today. But you won't see Rubio holding a basketball like that too often, and it's doubtful the accessories will stick.Follow Joan Niesen on Twitter.
