Doesn't this offseason feel like it has taken an eternity to pass? Last year we at least had Olympic hoops to hold us over for a few weeks in August. This year, we have had to pretend to enjoy baseball for far too long. The Vikings have been an abysmal cesspool of ineptitude, which has provided no solace while in NBA purgatory. The Wolves are back, and hopefully ready to FINALLY enamor the city once again.  Since just about every iteration of every Wolves preview has already been published with a smattering of predictions that the Wolves will finish as a 7th or 8th seed team if healthy, will not be able to defend well, etc. etc. etc., I will attempt to spare the repetition. Maybe. Here are a few quick and hopefully different "keys to success" for the year, several of many, in an effort to not waste your time by repeating the obvious (e.g. Love, Pek and Rubio need to be awesome). 1. Myth: "Ricky Rubio needs to improve his jump shot." This, to me, is ea...

Minnesota Timberwolves: Ricky Rubio, a 2014 NBA All Star?

Minnesota Timberwolves: Ricky Rubio, a 2014 NBA All Star? By Mike Elworth: Owner and Publisher/Hoopstuff.. If you haven’t heard over the last 5 years or so, Ricky Rubio is a special talent. 2 years ago, this talent came from Spain to the NBA and wowed the NBA immediately, as from his first game it was apparent that he was one of the best ball handlers and passers in the NBA. Sadly...

Ricky Rubio, Kevin Love understand importance of opener

MINNEAPOLIS -- When the Target Center lights go down and Ricky Rubio hears his name over the public address system Wednesday night, it'll be the Timberwolves point guard's first full immersion in the season-opener experience. As a rookie, he began the year coming off the bench. Last season, he sat next to fellow superstar Kevin Love in street clothes and enviously took in...

Kevin Love helps Wolves grind out opening-night win

MINNEAPOLIS -- It's as Rick Adelman feared. The new-look Minnesota Timberwolves can score. They can run. They can put an opponent in a hole. And they can also let it back out. Adelman, the team's veteran head man, before Wednesday night's 120-115 season-opening, overtime win against Orlando: "They seem to lose their concentration. They seem to be going pretty...

Wolves notebook: Brewer gets starting nod

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Timberwolves' muddled three-man picture became a little clearer in their season-opening victory over the Magic on Wednesday. A little. Free-agent acquisition Corey Brewer got the nod at small forward and immediately endeared himself to the 17,988 fans in attendance, some of whom probably recall a combustible, loose-cannon youngster who spent the first 3 12...

Practice makes perfect for 3-point woes, or so Wolves hope

MINNEAPOLIS -- It's nothing more than an extended game of around-the-world, not unlike the one you may have tried in the driveway as a youngster. Swish. "Six-for-six," the Timberwolves assistant seated under the nearest basket barks out. Swish. "Seven-seven." In-and-out. Kevin Love bellows an expletive that reverberates around a mostly-empty, cavernous Target...

Love's dramatics help Wolves hang on for OT victory in opener

The Timberwolves practiced the play that saved them from disaster in Wednesday’s season-opening 120-115 overtime victory over Orlando at Target Center the day before, without nearly as much success. They drilled on a sequence designed to free Kevin Love for a quick three-pointer, using Nikola Pekovic and Corey Brewer to set screens that enable Love to pop open free behind the...

Kevin Martin now opposes former 'family' member Kevin Durant

MINNEAPOLIS -- To Kevin Martin, the conversations when No. 35 in light blue comes to town are old hat. There's no stopping Kevin Durant. Corey Brewer, Dante Cunningham and whoever else coach Rick Adelman throws at Oklahoma City's superstar small forward will try Friday night at the Target Center, but they shouldn't plan on succeeding. "You can't really get...

Wolves' sights squarely set on ending playoff drought

MINNEAPOLIS -- The trio of basketball intellectuals sat together in Section 106 of the Target Center on Tuesday, conversing intently. On the same end of the gym, Kevin Love took his last round of post-practice jumpers before the first game day of 2013-14. Milt Newton leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, and looked two seats down at an animated Flip Saunders. Rick Adelman...

Love carries Wolves past Magic, 120-115

Kevin Love had 31 points and 17 rebounds and hit the game-tying 3-pointer with 10.2 seconds left to force overtime in the Minnesota Timberwolves' 120-115 victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. Ricky Rubio had 13 points, 11 assists and three steals for the Timberwolves, who survived a major scare from a young and rebuilding team. Arron Afflalo had 28 points and nine...

Saunders will watch from a different angle

(Eds: Adds details, quotes. With AP Photos.) By JON KRAWCZYNSKI AP Basketball Writer Flip Saunders' presence can often be felt before he is even heard as he makes the rounds at Target Center. The Minnesota Timberwolves' new basketball boss likes to sneak up behind unsuspecting folks and give them a squeeze on the shoulder, with a vise-like grip clamping down and a wry smile...

Magic-Timberwolves Preview

Although they played a total of 15 minutes together last season, the Minnesota Timberwolves are hoping Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio and Nikola Pekovic can stay on the court long enough to help the franchise end its lengthy playoff drought. Finally healthy, the Timberwolves should be feeling confident about getting off to a good start Wednesday night when they host the rebuilding Orlando...

Minnesota Timberwolves' Rob Hummel Speaks with WNDE

Robbie Hummel made the Timberwolves NBA roster for the '13'-'14 season and their first game was last night against E'Twaun Moore's Orlando Magic. I think it's fair to say that Rob Hummel is in the Drew Brees category of favorite sons of Purdue who almost nobody has a bad thing to say about. This is so true that I actually watched some NBA basketball in...

Minnesota Gets The Victory In Overtime

Minnesota 120                                                    Orlando 115 The Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic played in a very good and close game Wednesday night. The game went into overtime as Kevin Love hit a late shot, and then on the next possession Arron Affalo couldn’t get the final basket in regulation. The...

The Three Kings of NBA League Pass

Disclaimer: You’ll notice that the superstars of the NBA (Lebron, Durant, Rose, Harden, etc) have been excluded from this list. There is a reason for that, and its overexposure. Yeah, they are incredibly entertaining to watch, but this list focuses on the newer blood of the NBA. This trio of players have been around the league for a few years but 2013-14 is their coming out party...
