Doctors have cleared Cleveland forward/center Tyler Zeller to return after suffering a fractured left orbital bone and a concussion, the Cavaliers announced. Zeller will wear a protective mask Saturday night when the Cavs (2-6) play Dallas. The rookie was injured Nov. 5 in Los Angeles when he took an errant elbow that left him with a fractured cheekbone, a black eye and swollen face, and headaches. He told The Plain Dealer that he failed parts of the NBA's concussion test after the injury. "Just having him back will help," Cavs coach Byron Scott said, according to The Plain Dealer. "He's another big body who knows how to play. He's an integral part of what we do. He helps our rotation better." Zeller is adjusting to the mask, which he'll wear for an indefinite period. "It's like anything," he said. "You've got to get used to it. Dribbling could be more of a problem, but I don't dribble anyway. So it's cool...

Byron Scott says shorter rotation is Cavs’ “last resort”

With his Cleveland Cavaliers team struggling mightily on the defensive end and the large part of the abuse coming at the expense of his reserve unit, head coach Byron Scott still plans on sticking to his deep rotation, preferring his players focus on their individual efforts. At Thursday afternoon’s practice, Scott admitted that while he has considered shortening his rotation,...

Sekou Smith report: Cavaliers’ defense could hinder backcourt development

We know the Cavaliers’ defense is bad. But how bad in comparison to the rest of the league is measurable, and the measurement is ugly. Tha answer: very ugly. “When Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters combined for 52 points in a road win over the Los Angeles Clippers last week, we started to see some real potential in the Cleveland Cavaliers. Since then, the Cavs have lost four straight...

Cleveland's Struggles With Trading Anderson Varejao

The trading block is a beautiful thing in the mind of a basketball writer. Just remember, once you’re on our trading block, you will not be taken off until you are dealt. At least, that’s the perception. Until Kevin Martin got traded to Oklahoma City, I’ve seen at least 12 different trades involving him. Clippers backup point guard Eric Bledsoe has gain heavy trade momentum...

The Cavaliers focused on defense for the last three days in practice, but they still allowed 100+ points and 50+% shooting as the Mavericks used a late run to pull away from the Cavaliers 103-95, led by O.J. Mayo’s 19 point effort. Chris Kaman outplayed Anderson Varejao with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 blocks, while Darren Collison and Vince Carter each added 14 points. For the...

Cavs may seek help for bench bunch

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Dont think the Cavaliers bench woes are a big secret around these parts. The coach, his assistants and the players are all well aware. If I said I had the right pieces from the bench standpoint, Id be lying, said Cavs coach Byron Scott. Statsitically, the bench isnt awful. It actually outscored Oklahoma Citys bench (29-22) in a road loss earlier this week...

It feels crazy to write that, because Varejao isn’t the kind of center you...

No-fun learning process continues for Cavs

CLEVELAND -- Some nights, you just dont have it. Some nights, you really do -- and the Dallas Mavericks were the latter on Saturday. Man, were they ever. Standing there on the other side, witnessing it all, were the poor Cavaliers. And by poor, were talking about five straight losses, two straight at home and just not a whole lot of confidence that this team is headed anywhere...

Irving, Cavs can't stop hot-shooting Mavericks

CLEVELAND -- After Kyrie Irving broke his hand last summer, there was much trepidation at Quicken Loans Arena on Saturday when Irving was taken to the locker room holding his hand. Cavaliers-76ers Preview

The Cleveland Cavaliers have few complaints about their Kyrie Irving-led offense, but it's been trumped by a suspect defense that ranks among the worst in the league. It's been quite the opposite for the Philadelphia 76ers. Cleveland looks to end a five-game losing streak Sunday night when it visits Philadelphia, which has made up for its lack of scoring with one of the...
