Season Summary

The 2011 season was a forgettable one for the Minnesota Vikings as they plummeted to the bottom tier of the NFL. The addition of veteran Quarterback Donovan McNabb was an utter failure and injuries, age and an arrest took a huge toll on the organization. The shortened offseason and the combination of a rookie head coach and the eventual starting of a rookie Quarterback didn't lead to much success, but the organization can only hope to put 2011 behind them and begin a youth movement to build for the future.

2011 Record

2011 was a disappointing 3-13 record, and the Vikings did not make the Playoffs

Positions of Need

The Vikings have many holes to fill, but the three critical areas are the Offensive Line, Cornerback and Wide Receiver. On the O-Line, the Vikings desperately need a stout Left Tackle to protect the blindside of Quarterback Christian Ponder especially considering the recently released Offensive Linemen Anthony Herrera and Steve Hutchinson. The Vikings also need to add a true number one receiver to stretch the field and allow Percy Harvin to work from the slot where he can be effective and versatile. They also need to add to their depleted secondary at both the Cornerback and Safety position.

First Round Target(s)

With the first two picks virtually locked in, the Minnesota Vikings have the pick of the litter outside of the top two Quarterbacks, and that pick will be Matt Kalil, OT from USC. The only plan B for the Vikings would be to trade the pick, but the lure of a solid blindside protector for Christian Ponder should be too much to convince the Vikings trade out of the number three spot.

Teams To Keep An Eye On

It seems highly unlikely that Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III aren’t the first two picks in the draft, so the Vikings will have their choice at number three and they have little choice but to lock up a long term offensive line stalwart in Kalil. The only true vulture in this situation, is the Vikings themselves.  Hopefully the team will remember the Troy Williamson debacle and take the virtual sure thing in Kalil.

Trade Winds

It’s still possible that a team like the Cleveland Browns or St. Louis Rams could make an offer to the Vikings to trade up to the number three spot to target Justin Blackmon at WR, but the offer would have to be exceptional for the Vikings to drop down and risk losing out on Kalil. The risk of losing out on not only the third best player in the draft, but the biggest need for the team should be enough to lock the Vikings in on the third pick.

Draft History

2011 Christian Ponder, Quarterback, 12th
2010 Traded to Detroit
2009 Percy Harvin, Wide Receiver, 21st
2008 Traded to Kansas City as a part of the trade for Jared Allen
2007 Adrian Peterson, Running Back, 7th
