Found May 26, 2012 on FootBasket:

The New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees have been in a hole, as both sides have been trying long and hard on trying to reach a new, long-term contract.

So far, talks haven't really been going anywhere and it seems both sides are starting to get really frustrated. However, none of them are backing down.

Brees is looking to become the highest-paid player in the league and will have to reach a deal by July 16. If he does, rumor has it that he could sit out the upcoming season.

Although it would be unlike of Brees to do such a thing, it is possible considering how much a competitor he is.

Writes Pat Yasinskas of ESPN:

"Brees could just decide to sit out the season. Public perception is that Brees never would do that because he's such a competitor. I'm not here to rain on Brees' public perception. My experience around him leads me to believe he is what he's perceived to be -- and that's not true of all the people I cover. Brees really is a fierce competitor. But that's part of the problem. It's hard to say exactly what he would do if the deadline passed with no deal. At this point, Brees himself might not even know what he would do. But my impression of him leads me to believe there's at least the possibility he could feel like he has been wronged by the Saints and could swing back as strongly as possible."

To me, it would be extremely surprising if Brees sits out. However, it's still possible, especially considering what Yasinskas said. We have seen players before sit out most or all of an NFL season for a contract, such as recently by Vincent Jackson a few seasons ago.

What do you think? Will Brees sit out the season?

Saints Nation: Pat Yasinskas of ESPN Ponders the Possibility of a Season without Drew Brees

If Drew Brees doesn't have a long term contract by mid July, then he has a choice to make - 1. sign the 1 year franchise tender or 2. sit out 2012. Drew Brees sitting out the entire 2012 season due to a contract dispuste is not something I've been really considering much. Even with the latest Pat Yasinskas of ESPN article bringing that possibility to our collective attention...

Nick Toon looks to follow in his fathers’ footsteps

New Orleans Saints rookie Nick Toon might not be the fastest receiver on the field but at 6’2, 215 lbs his features are just what the Saints look for. The former University of Wisconsin receiver has the NFL in his genes. His father, Al Toon, played for the New York Jets from 1985 to 1992. In

CBA Could Help Saints QB Drew Brees Gain Strong Leverage In Contract Talks

If the NFL Players Association is right, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees could gain some serious leverage against the team. Under the terms of the CBA, a player who is franchised three times gets at least a 44 percent increase in his salary. Brees was franchised by the San Diego Chargers in 2005 and was designated as such by the Saints this offseason. If the 2005 tag counts...

Saints Nation: Martez Wilson May Switch to Defensive End

3rd Round draft choice Martez Wilson was a promising rookie a year ago, but he mostly made his mark on pass rushing downs while blitzing from the linebacker position. The Saints liked his ability to get to the quarterback so much, in fact, they're apparently thinking about making the move to switch Wilson from linebacker to defensive end. Wilson apparently worked exclusively...

Smith lashes out against NFL owners

NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith used the same fiery and defiant language that was heard on the same sidewalk in front of the union's headquarters a year ago. "Simply stated, cartels do what will cartels do when left unchecked," Smith told reporters Thursday afternoon. The fact that the NFL and the players union agreed to a new 10-year collective...

Martez Wilson practicing at defensive end for Saints

The Saints used a 3rd round pick on Martez Wilson in 2011 and he played sparingly as a rookie, which is not a surprise. However, the Saints brought in 3 free agent linebackers this offseason, Curtis Lofton, David Hawthorne, and Chris Chamberlain so there isn’t a lot of room for Wilson to play at linebacker. Given that, the Saints are working him out at defensive end in OTAs. At...

Sean Payton Calling Plays For Himself

I'm a baller and a play caller T... Sean Payton has a ton of time on his hands. The suspended New Orleans Saints Head coach is doing his best to keep busy — Check out Sean spotted with a nice looking older woman — The guy eats, sleeps and breathes football, so this will probably be the most difficult year of his life. Someone’s gotta keep coach busy. -TO Sean Payton Plays...

New Orleans Saints: 2012 Schedule Breakdown

This year the New Orleans Saints will be playing without head coach Sean Payton, while trying to become the first team to win the NFC South division in consecutive seasons. This article looks at what New Orleans can expect from their 2012 regular season schedule. In the first three weeks of the season, New Orleans will play against the Kansas City Chiefs,  Carolina Panthers...

Saints LB Jonathan Vilma's Lawsuit Assigned In Federal Court

Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma's federal libel and slander lawsuit against NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has been assigned to Judge Ginger Berrigan. Berrigan, a Clinton appointee, has served on the bench in the Eastern District Court of Louisiana since her confirmation in 1994. As of court closing Friday, there does not appear to have been any motion filed yet by the NFL in...

NFC South Nuggets

Time for the much awaited NFC South Nuggets, where I belittle the moves made by the Saints, Panthers, Buccaneers and usually the Saints again. The Saints rightly are looking for a discount from Drew Brees after they were fleeced in their previous contract, apparently. In perhaps one of the most foolish things I have ever heard, the Saints feel they deserve a discount for Drew...

Saints' defense learning Spagnuolo's way

The all-out blitzing the Saints unleashed during recent seasons appears to be a thing of the past under new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Saints free safety Malcolm Jenkins is lining up closer to the line of scrimmage and is no longer a tackler of last resort. Martez Wilson, drafted last year to play linebacker, finds himself practicing at defensive end. New Orleans&...

New Orleans Saints Fantasy Football Projections

QB Drew Brees (New Orleans) Drew Brees was insane last season with 5476 yards, 46 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He won’t be that good again for 3 reasons. One, no one does that. Two, he lost one of his starting receivers, Robert Meachem. Three, he lost his Head Coach. He should see his YPA go down, as well as his TD:INT ratio, but the Saints have thrown the ball 1315 times...

The Saints’ Jermon Bushrod on Bounties, Brees & His Big Ole Heart

To say this has been a “difficult” offseason for the Saints would be as big an understatement as saying T.O.’s career is a “little bit” over. (I mean c’mon, a Dr. Phil “Baby Mama” episode, Terrell??) This offseason has been one dog fart after another. And if it has affected you as a fan, you’ve got to know it has been a total suck-fest for the players. So imagine...

Saints SS Roman Harper Wants Defense To Retain Their Intensity In New Scheme

New Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo appears to be the ideal leader to build off all the successful aspects that former coordinator Gregg Williams brought to the Saints defense, while breathing a new life into the unit at the same time according to Mike Tripplet of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. But then even before the bounty scandal erupted this offseason, Williams...

Brees overestimating his worth

Nothing against Drew Brees, who seems to be the consummate leader of the vilified New Orleans Saints, but the main man on this football team is coach Sean Payton. And this is partly the reason Saints owner Tom Benson has been reluctant to simply write the check that Brees, who missed work this week, wants from the organization. On the open market, Brees wouldn't command the...
