I like NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock. He is precise, reliable and loyal. And therein lies why my like doesn't translate to a full out girl crush on him.If he likes a player he is unwilling to budge on his evaluation regardless of his Combine performance.  Enter Manti Te'o.Te'o entered the Combine with much hype, Tebow-like hype.  Te'o had an outstanding regular season.  Against the competition he faced during the regular season, he excelled.  And then came post-season.  Against the Alabama Crimson Tide, in the most important game of his career, Te'o disappeared.  The Crimson Tide is tough, NFL tough.  Against the most quality opponent his tape is circumspect. So it was important T'eo showed up and performed well at the Combine.  And once again he disappeared.  Te'o came in smaller than anticipated.  He weighed in not at his 'playing' weight of 253 but a slight 241 pounds.  Most players drop weight to aid in their 40-yard time.  Te'o did not.  Te'o ran a slow 4.82 in the 40-yard.  He jumped a non-explosive 9'5".  And his on the field drills were not awe inspiring. Listening to the hype you would have thought he was 14K gold waiting to be polished.  He was in fact fool's gold. But he unfortunately was not the only one.Texas A&M's Damontre Moore lacked the luster of the bright shining metal.  Moore is 6'4" and weighs in at 250 pounds.  Moore had the chance to solidify a first round draft status.  Instead Moore ran a 4.87 with a 1.69 split.  On his second 40-attempt Moore pulled up with an injured hamstring.   But that wasn't the worst part, the defensive end managed only 11 reps on the bench press, before the hamstring injury.  Among the 37 defensive linemen he was 37th in the bench.  Consensus first pick tackle Luke Joeckel shined a little brighter but had a little tarnish.  It is hard being the one with the target on your back.  And while Joeckel didn't have a terrible Combine, Eric Fisher was better. For the first pick do you want good or better? While the Combine doesn't encapsulate a career, it is a benchmark of athletic ability, explosiveness and the ability to focus over long period of time.  Sure, some are better on tape than their Combine appearances.  But when you know you are going in for one of the most important interviews of your career, wouldn't you want to be prepared? The lesson of it all: don't be fooled by bright shiny objects. Follow me on Twitter @neverenoughglt
