Getty Images With safety Dashon Goldson currently under the franchise tag, the San Francisco 49ers will have to decide whether or not they want to sign him to a long-term extension at the end of the year. Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com believes the 49ers will have to weigh their options when it comes to re-signing a player like Goldson, since they’re going to need to pay linebacker Navarro Bowman at some point. “The 49ers have invested heavily on the defensive side of the ball in particular, and with a growing cast of young standouts there, who will continue to merit new contracts? Do they need to invest heavily at safety now for the long-term? A year ago Goldson, who has yet to sign his tag, was a free agent and the market was soft for him,” wrote La Canfora. “He lingered for a while and ended up being a bargain for San Francisco.” “GM Trent Baalke has done a great job assembling talent and finding value in free agency. But given normal budget limitations, and the fact the team is building a new stadium, and with guys like Navarro Bowman around the corner, how much do your pour into the back end? Especially with all of the production they get from the front seven. With all of that in mind, maybe it makes sense to wait and see what happens with other contracts at the position as well.” At the end of the day, the 49ers may not be able to afford to keep Goldson past this season.
