Earlier this month I wrote a post on 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick getting flak from 49ers fan on being seen wearing a Miami Dolphins hat. I disagreed with my fellow fans and thought it was not a big deal. Colin felt the same way and went to Twitter and Instagram to tell Niner Nation to chill. On July 5, he took a photo on Instagram of him holding the Dolphins cap saying, “This the hat y’all mad at? I’m goin wear what I want regardless of what you think, all you need to worry about is the fact that I grind for my teammates and the 49ers! I plan on doin this until they won’t let me in the building!” Keap must have felt the heat by the team since three days later after “Hatgate” he looked to make it up to the fans and the media by posing in an Instagram photo wearing a 49ers cap, and writing: “It’s just swag it ain’t never hurt nobody!” It looks like one of Kaepernick’s teammates doesn’t agree with me or Colin. 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman was on NFL Network’s “Total Access” show last night and spoke on his own feelings when he saw his QB wearing that hat. “This is a huge mistake by Kaep,” Bowman said. “I’m sure he understands that now. In his defense, we’re young, in our era these days we like to match our snapbacks with our outfits.” Yes “kids these days” love to match their hats with their clothes. Bowman feels that Kapernick in the future should wear caps featuring teams in other leagues. “The hats now these days are very important to the outfit, so Kaep I understand what you did, but let’s stay away from the NFL teams. Stick to NBA, go to college or the baseball hats,” he said on the NFL Network. Even ESPN analyst and former NFL coach Herm Edwards weighed in saying, “Steve Young and Joe Montana wouldn’t do that. They get it. You’re the quarterback. You are the face of the franchise, and whether you like it or not, on the field or off the field, you’ve got to act that way.” I can see how his teammates might have done a double take when they saw the photos online of their QB sporting another NFL team’s hat, but it is not that big of a deal. I still think that since so many people are wanting to talk about anything NFL related this story became a bigger story than it should have been. At least he wasn’t wearing a Seahawks hat!
