In a move that suggests running back Anthony Dixon will remain on the 53-man roster, the 49ers have evidently released 10-year veteran Rock Cartwright.
Wrote Cartwright, via Twitter: Wanna thank the 49ers for the opportunity.
Cartwright and Dixon were battling to serve as the No. 5 running back, a job that will include plenty of special-teams duty. A sixth-round pick in 2010, Dixon was viewed as a long shot to make the roster entering training camp, but he added to his versatility by volunteering to play fullback this summer, he led the 49ers in carries (42), rushing yards (171) and touchdowns (2) during the preseason.
Cartwright, one of the Raiders top special teamers the past two seasons, had 85 yards on 22 carries.
At 24, Dixon is significantly younger than Cartwright, 32, and hes also cheaper, Dixon will earn a base salary of $540,000 this season. Cartwright was scheduled to earn $925,000.
