Poor, poor Vernon Davis. As long as there have been Super Bowl Media Days as it currently exists in its bloated form, there have been individuals who somehow manage to secure media access to the three-ring circus. And then, in a manner that only true wisenheimers can accomplish, proceed to ask ridiculous questions of the assembled coaching staff and players. Sometimes, it works brilliantly and the absurdity, ridiculousness and relative whimsy of the questions posed result in truly humorous scenes. Sadly, in my humble opinion, this is not one of those occasions. San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis — with his jersey rolled up so his massive biceps can be adequately displayed — was on the receiving end of one of those preposterous questions that really misses the mark. On a few levels. While the identity of the guy asking the question is unknown, it can be surmised in light of the nature of his inquiry that he was a big fan of recess back in his elementary school days: “If you were playing Red Rover, who would you ask to come over?” A Red Rover question? What the heck? That’s the best he could come up with? If I had the opportunity this guy did and wanted to go with an inane playground reference, I would have asked, “Vernon, thanks for taking my question. Hopscotch: A fun game or a twisted ploy perpetrated by a cabal involving the nation’s leading chalk makers?” Actually, that is pretty dumb, too. Maybe just staying away from playground questions is the better way to go, although I give Davis credit for his witty response: Beyonce. But why? She wouldn’t be very good at Red Rover is my guess. Oh, it’s for some other reason besides Red Rover-playing acumen? Ahh, I see.
