AFC grades: Top marks for Pats, Steelers, Raiders

Given that there wasn't a lot of great offensive talent at skill positions available this year, most teams in the AFC focused on upgrading their defenses in hopes of chasing down top quarterbacks Tom Brady of New England and Peyton Manning of Indianapolis. Either that or they spent high picks on offensive linemen in hopes of having the type of running attacks to keep the ball away from those quarterbacks.

In that vein, New York added pass rusher Vernon Gholston, an amazing physical specimen from Ohio State, while Jacksonville made two trades up to nab defensive ends Derrick Harvey of Florida and Quentin Groves of Auburn.

Not surprisingly, Miami and Kansas City took big strides toward rebuilding their depleted offensive and defensive lines. New England made key moves to improve their aging linebacking corps and Indianapolis made picks with an eye toward the future.

But the biggest move of the draft was Oakland taking Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, the most obvious game-changing talent in the draft. The Raiders continued one of the most aggressive offseasons in the NFL, going neck-and-neck with the Jets.

That helped give the Raiders a good grade in the draft. We'll see how it helps during the season:

CLICK it 4 full read-side note: McFadden to the Raiders - even i was estatic over that move, why? he's a great player and will be a huge force to reckon with. i'm a bit biased too, i had alot of ppl. pullin for this guy to go to the Bay!!!

McFadden to the Bay!!

yeah boy that's the man right there!

lol tbear

Pittsburgh Steelers
Picks: RB Rashard Mendenhall, WR Limas Sweed, DE Bruce Davis, OT Tony Hills, QB Dennis Dixon, LB Mike Humpal, S Ryan Mundy
Positives: Mendenhall, Sweed, Davis and Dixon
Negatives: Hills
Bottom line: A. This is a truly great draft, although it's unlikely Dixon will get a chance to develop as a passer with Ben Roethlisberger entrenched. A month ago, there was a debate about who the second-best back in the draft was after Darren McFadden and many people thought it was Mendenhall. Then he fell behind Jonathan Stewart and Felix Jones. The Steelers nabbed a falling value, a great move in drafting. Sweed has awesome talent and Davis will convert to an OLB and has the quickness to be another great pass rusher in the Steelers' 3-4 system. The injured Dixon was a great value in the fifth round.

ya man but what's the deal with the negative on hill? again i stress steeltown ball bring it. what a year this is going to be

A barnburner of a year.....LOL.

indeed fiver!!!!!!!! can't wait for football to start!!!

I like how the Ravens got value, but two things nag me:

- We probably could've waited for Joe Flacco to come to us

- We didn't address need like I wanted to see (DE, CB, although Fabian Washingon will be OK), and took some luxury picks (two runningbacks, two safeties?)

i've been hearing that alot about Flacco-time will tell i guess?
well you have a good guy at the helm & i'm not just sayin that because he used to work for the eagles-he truly is a good guy and i'm can only assume, he's working things out where he feels they should be? wheeling & dealing is not done, so keep the faith. this season is going to be alot of fun for all the teams, so congrats to yours and the picks you like !!!!

Alright Pats! That was a great draft passing on Dennis Dixon like that for who? Kevin somebody. Anyway I hope we sign Mike Vick and his brother and continue to be the most hated team in sports. I love this team. I just wish we would draft better. Im not sure of the exact stats but, I don't think that we have had many draftees go on to become major contributors lately. We need to take some more risks like the Moss signing. We also should have brought back Corey Dillon after Sammy Morris went down last year. There's still time to bring in Ricky Williams and give him a personal guru/babysitter so we can get the last gas that's in his tank.

Kevin Mayo. u r a dumba$$

Wow. I am a dumbass. This guy's comment made me stupider!!! I meant Jerod Mayo. JHC

I think the Steelers draft is being overrated by many people. They got big name players but they didn't address team needs on the offensive line. I say that the Steelers should get a B for this draft.

Good point. They got good value with well-known guys Mendenhall and Sweed but the draft is not about fantasy football

They did lose Faneca and that's a big loss, but they still had a good overall draft. Will be interesting to see how the O-Line pans out this year. Rothleisberger is good at escaping the rush, but no team wants their QB running for his life trying to make a play on every down.

i'll take the B lol

ya me to i just want the season to start now

I can't believe it is 4 months away! AH!
I can't wait!

ME EITHER lol!!!!!!!

Why is baseball season sooooo painfully long and football season is over before you blink.
I mean - I know why but maybe they could play just a couple more games.....it's just not fair.

it sure does feel that way ;0 !!!!

Broncos got a steal with Peyton Hillis. He can come in automatically and make a difference blocking for the RB's there and also going out on the flats and getting 7-10 yards a catch. He is going to be very good. I compare him to Mike Alstott. TC get ready.

yeah they did, where's TC anyway?

Steelers, Cowboys, and Raiders are my three top teams that did there thing in the draft. Steelers vs Cowboys SuperBowl... ya digg?

WE DIG!!!!!!!
lmao!!!

Steelers vs Cowboys SuperBowl
i like it

I am so stoked to see Darren rip it up!!

(sorry - no diggity on the Cowboy/Steeler SB)

LOL!!!! no worries here raiderdave!!!! my buddy tommyr, is a HUGE darren fan-i'll admit even i was jumping around like a kid @ christmas!!

I like Darren McFadden, but I don't think an RB is going to cure the Raiders woes.

no maybe not, but it's a start, i dig your new pic BTW chicka!!!

If they get some good QB play, it will help.

This year Jamarcus will be doing some good, but needs Wide Receivers to do a lot of damage.... which he has none...

I think next year if the Raiders get a good Wide Receiver next season and maybe a good slot guy in the draft, then you will see DMC and Russell have great seasons next year. This season I think we will see decent seasons but not great from either. Its hard to do stuff with your running game when defenses will have 8 in the box half the game.

very true !!!!
