Cash Tuesday : Dallas Cowboys Sign Terence Newman and Marion Barber To Long-Term Deals

Oh well, all fans of other NFC teams that kept harping about Barber going to Miami or somewhere else? Well, you can stop now.

IRVING, Texas - On a day that was supposed to only signal the start of OTA practices here at Valley Ranch, the Cowboys locked up a centerpiece on each side of the ball.

The Cowboys signed running back Marion Barber and cornerback Terence Newman to long-term deals on Tuesday that total more than $96 million.

Newman, who had a year remaining on his original contract from 2003, signed a seven-year, $51 million contract that included a $12 million signing bonus and more than $22.5 million in guaranteed money over the first three years.

Barber, who had yet to sign his restricted free agent tender of $2.561 million, instead was rewarded with a seven-year, $45 million deal with more than $16 million in guarantees, including a $12 million signing bonus.

I am a fan of the Newman contract accross the board. It was a fair deal both ways. That deal confirmed what I suspected about him and his goals. Barber's on the other hand is a little less exciting for me. With his style of play it seems injuries will become very likely before this deal is done. I'd have to see how badly it balloons before I jumped on board with his contract.

Well, at least he'll be happy and now we can use that 1-2 punch of Barber and Felix Jones. If Barber gets injured, we've got a little bit of insurance with Choice although he hasn't played one NFL down. Like Emmitt says, all players look good in shorts at the mini-camp, but what can they do when they get the pads on?

Now that excites me quite a bit. I am more concerned with a ballooning cap figure coupling with injuries. I suppose that was a lot of maybes for one sentence especially in light of today's cba activity. At least in Barber's the guaranteed money is a little less. Too bad Hamlin didn't make the deadline, though. He is the next must, in my opinion. Ware wants to be a Cowboy, Henry just became a luxury, and Canty doesn't have too many other options for him. He is a good 3-4 defensive end, but I don't know about either a 4-3 end or tackle. He'll make his best money with us and I think he knows it. Now let's just see if one or two of those young lineman are hungry enough to earn a payday and make this interesting for us.

I think Anthony Spencer will break out this year, too. That why they traded Ayodele. Maybe Spears or someone will step up and do something this year. If Ware gets some help in the middle, we could have a pretty good pass rush. Tank was just coming on at the end of last year, too. I think Hamlin and Canty will get take care of, regardless of the deadline. If PacMan plays, we got him for a song and Henry could move to strong safety if need be because I still think Roy is on the auction block. Not sure what they can get for him, but that June 1 deadline is approaching fast. It's nice to have options with the two new rookie corners coming in.

It certainly helps that we have a great team deep in young talent. That should help sign these guys. Business or not, no one makes the NFL without a strong desire to win a superbowl. Hamlin's got the most options, but here is the best chance to win the big one. (Unless Greenbay decides to break tradition and pay crazy money for a free agent safety) The other teams challenging for that honor are pretty well set at safety, don't you think?

My wife is a Purdue girl so Spencer is high on my wish list. I was upset when we drafted him but thought he proved himself last season both as a starter and off the bench. He was better as a starter, but he'll see more time this year and It should pan out nicely for us.

I really like Hamlin as a cover guy and a hitter. Hope Dallas can get it done with him. Spencer is going to be OK, I'm sure. I like his speed and pass coverage abilities. Also got Zach Thomas as insurance. Things are looking good on defense right now. Only area I am worried about is the offensive line. Not totally sold on a couple of those guys.
