David Garrard Played His Way Into The Elite-QB Club Last Season. But Can The NFL's Newest $60 Million Man Make Jacksonville Care About The Jags?

If you were to visit David Garrard at his Jacksonville home, located in a freshly minted, gated neighborhood blocks from a fancy mall and P.F. Chang's, you'd likely find him relaxing on his leather sectional in front of the TV, watching the Food Network, his considerable frame wedged between a pile of unfolded baby clothes and his overwrought toy dog, Jax.

You might think to yourself that he seems happy, that his hands could palm a frozen turkey and that most NFL quarterbacks don't spend their downtime watching Rachael Ray. But you wouldn't think, not even when Garrard grins and stands to greet you, unfolding his 6'1", 245-pound body like a Transformer, that this is the man who took Jacksonville from overriding apathy to something approaching Jaguarmania last season. Or that he just pocketed a seven-year contract worth $60 million (about $20 million guaranteed), making him the highest-paid Jag ever.

David Garrard played great last season, I don't think he is "elite". Yet, he should improve with the additions of Troy Williamson, and Jerry Porter. Maybe some great deep passes from Garrard to Porter/Williamson, will get Jacksonville excited.

I am surpised the Jacksonville area won't support a winner. They should compete strongly for the division title this year. Thanks for your comment.

Times are changing....The owner , staff and team have revived the cities hopes...If they keep this up..I see Jacksonville becoming a stable and strong market...Its called... just win baby.

Winning definitely helps. I remember a time less than a few years ago that the Cowboys were having problems selling tickets and now all season tickets are sold out.

i watched an interview he did, last year i think, when he got the starting position. very level headed & grounded, loved hearing him talk. great post fiver!!!

Thanks. Yeah, he's really blossoming as a QB down there. Too bad they don't have the support they need from the fans. Some cities would be more than happy to have a winning team in their city.

I dont know Jaguars are to Jacksonville what the Marlins are to Miami.... and to all the jacksonville fans if you guys cant get some real support around your team while there good your owner just might wanna pack up n leave to..... maybe LA? haha

duval!!!!!!!!!!

QB's I'd take ahead of Garrard: Big Ben, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Donovan Mcnabb, Carson Palmer, Matt Hasselbeck.
Elite QB's in the league: Big Ben, P. Manning, Brady. The rest are all second-tier guys with above average skills.

We're not doing a QB comparison here and I didn't say Garrard was better than any of the above-mentioned although he did make it further into the playoffs than Big Ben, Drew Brees, Dovovan McNabb, Carson Palmer and Matt Hassebeck. Thanks and have a good one.

not to mention he whipped Big Ben's @ss in the playoffs.

Now you can see why Baltimore was so upset when Jacksonville got a team in expansion over them. There were a lot of complaints that Tagliabue just didn't want a team so close to the Redskins.

Baltimore is close to Washington, but the population there is enough, it shouldn't hurt one or the other. Not anything close to Jacksonville to spur the attendance. I can see what you mean.

Yeah 9-for-21 and throwing for a 140 yards is handing it to Big Ben. Ben's already got a Championship Ring and is firmly locked in as a top-tier QB. Let's talk about overall body of work not a one-year snapshot.

I believe this article referred to Garrard as an 'elite' QB. If you can put 7-10 guys ahead of you and your sample is only 32, I'd hardly call that 'elite'.

stats mean nothing, Garrard led Jacksonville in that game, and produced.

The guys was one win away from a Super Bowl shot. I'd say that's production enough.

I am one happy fan...Knowing Lord Byron days are over....David has stepped in and done well...His limit has yet bean reached...And as far as this team moving...Not a chance...Jacksonville has done very well in its 1st 10years as a new franchise...Look it up..This will open your blind eye..

I am a big Jaguars fan and I really like Garrard but he won't have a season like last year. He will throw more touchdowns but their is no chance that he only throws 3 interceptions again. My guess is that he will have around 25 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions which is still very good. The Jaguars are in good shape to win and by far this preseason is the most love they have ever received from the national media. The only reason why the Jaguars would be moved is because the stadium is too big for the city and lots of people don't come out to the games unless the team is winning.

the team wins all of the time and still no one shows up. They have one of the smallest stadiums in the NFL, and still can't fill it.
