Being a Jets fan can be a very painful experience. I'd rather get beat up in some back alley on the Lower East Side than sit through another 4-12 season.
Now that we've got Brett Favre, every Jet fan I've talked to has pretty much said the same thing: "Do you think he goes down in week 1 or 2?" Personally, I think it will be week two. We're like abused puppies - so used to senseless beat downs and failures that we can't help but wince anytime anything good happens. It's to be expected when any human being is forced to sit and watch that many missed field goals.
Wednesday night, approximately 2:30 am, I went on stubhub.com and bought two tickets to The Jets-Dolphins game in Miami week 1. I wasn't sober and that's the best way I could come up with to see Favre on the field in a Jets uniform. I could get tickets to a game here at the Meadowlands but who really knows if Favre will be able to make it that far. Yes, I know it's only week2.
Of course Brett has to make it through the preseason first. The following would be a typical scenario for the Jets: Favre swoops in wearing the Green and White destined to take us all to the promised land of Super Bowl Nirvana only to go down in the third preseason game and never take another NFL snap. To be honest, I was worried he was going to get hit by lightning on the sidelines last night in Cleveland.
The lightning delay last night gave me hope that God was a Jets fan all of a sudden. Clemens comes out. He throws a few passes. Gets a first down. Then he sneaks it on a fourth and one and gets stuffed. Now the Browns have the ball and with a little help from Justin Miller (pass interference) they're knocking on the end zone door. Next play, Braylon Edwards pulls a circus trick out of his butt for a touchdown. I'm thinking, "Yup. I remember this. This is the Jets' defense from last season. Check out your new team Brett." ) Then BOOM! Lightning delays the game. It was like some higher power just couldn't watch anymore. I know I couldn't.
Look, I know the Jets won in the end but they sure tried to give the Browns a touchdown in the final minutes. Flags were flying like it was a national holiday: pass interferences and roughing the passer (that one looked like it hurt- gotta save those for week 2) detracted from a punt returned for a touchdown (a nice one too) by Dwight Lowery.
I hope you saw the set of wheels on David Clowney. Homey burnt Cleveland to the tune of 4 receptions for 163 yards. Think Favre's going to remember that guy's number?
The Jets play the Redskins next Saturday and I've got my fingers crossed that Brett makes it through uninjured. He might not even be ready to take the field which is A-OK with me. Less time playing preseason games means less chance Favre will get injured during the preseason. He's an incredibly durable player and I'm worried about him getting hurt already. Ridiculous? Not for anyone who calls themselves a Jets fan. Other shoes tend to drop with great velocity around here.
Last thought here but it might be an important one. I don't know if you saw Favre's press conference with Mayor Bloomberg but I swear it looks like he's got the beginnings of a moustache growing on his upper lip. Look at the picture. If Favre is bringing in some Giambi-esque Yankee magic to training camp then I think we're in for a great ride. Can he already be having that much fun? I hope so.
