Iggle Corner - Trading for that #1 WR - 3/4/08

Well the Philadelphia Eagles dove into Free Agency head first by acquiring the biggest defensive name out there in defensive back Asante Samuel, which was a huge shock to a lot of us Eagle fans. Because normally the birds like to keep it low key during the first few waves of free agency. They then attempted to make an even bigger splash by offering Randy Moss a contract. Obviously he didn't sign but the word was that had he declined to sign with the Patriots he would have signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

But would haves and could haves mean very little to us here in Philadelphia. We want, no scratch that, we NEED a top flight receiver and now the Eagles organization finally realizes this. So the word has been going around that the Eagles are desperately trying to work a deal that would bring in Wide Receiver Larry Fitzgerald to the City of Brotherly love. So far the Cardinals are saying no dice, according to some very close sources to the Eagles, the Birds offered them disgruntled cornerback Lito Sheppard and a second round draft pick to make the deal, which Arizona turned down.

It has also been in the news that the Cardinals are trying to work out a deal that would keep Fitzgerald in Arizona long-term. Many view this action to sign Fitzgerald to another deal as another way of saying the Cardinals just are not going to give up Fitzgerald. Others who are familiar with trade negotiations in the NFL view this as a way to force the Eagles to offer up more for Fitzgerald.

Now whatever the case may be, the Eagles need this receiver to make a run at being a super bowl contender. I was not the only one who was disappointed when the Eagles allowed Berrian and other free agent receivers to sign with other teams. Now there are no deep threat capable wide-outs on the free agent market and the Eagles now must provoke some type of trade with a team. If not the Cardinals, some other team in the NFL.

So that got me thinking, obviously the number one Receiver on the Eagles wish list is Fitzgerald. But if they aren't willing to give up what it takes to get him, who else would they be able to acquire before training camp?

So here's my list...

1. Larry Fitzgerald [ WR || ARIZONA ]

I do agree with the Eagles, landing this guy should be there number one priority. How can you disagree? After all he's among the top receivers that aren't in their thirties. He is the best long term solution out there for the Eagles to go forward and win Championships with.

2. Roy Williams [ WR || DETROIT ]

If the talks with Arizona are done with, I think the Eagles should go after this guy. He has expressed his unhappiness in Detroit. He is also one of the NFL's top deep threat receivers and teamed together with Donovan McNabb would raise his status even higher. I did hear that the Lions wanted some starters, a top draft pick and someone's first born son to acquire Roy. But if Roy can give us the help we desperately need then it would be worth it.

3. Donald Driver [ WR || GREEN BAY ]

With Bret Favre's decision to retire from the NFL this might be the time for the Packers to rebuild their offense. Trading their top receiver might be something they are willing to do now that Favre's great career is now at an end.

4. Andre Johnson [ WR || HOUSTON ]

This guy is a great young threat on a bad team. A bad team that wants to get better, so send them Lito along with a draft pick and we might land this guy. He's another guy who if teamed with McNabb can be lethal.

5. Lee Evans [ WR || BUFFALO ]

Now if we're looking for a deep threat this guy knows how to go deep. Going deep is about all the Bills are good at doing nowadays. The reason why is this guy – Lee Evans.

Obviously these players aren't the best receivers in the league but they are among the best. After all no one would take me seriously if I suggested the Eagles trade for Chad Johnson, Steve Smith, Reggie Wayne or Marvin Harrison now would they? I tried to keep these trade suggestions out of fantasy land and more inside the realm of possibility.

Now if anyone disagrees with me or happens to have a better trade possibility please let me know. Peace.

we're not getting any of these guys...enjoy waiting for the draft wth the rest of us

I disagree, while there's an excellent possibility that they won't land any of these receivers. I was just stating possibile receivers who could stretch the feild for this team. Now while I agree we may have to wait for the draft for anything to truly happen. I do believe they will pick up someone through trade and whether or not it is two weeks for now or the draft they will make a trade, and I do assume that they will acquire a WR with that trade.

Thanks for posting.

Fitzgerald remains in AZ until further notice. Have the Eagles even talked to Detroit? Donald Driver's just another name ( we have enough rumors already thank you very much). Andre Johnson resigned with the Texans already.(days ago,check it out). And Lee Evans, well, compare his numbers to Reggie Brown and tell me if you still think he's a top WR. I was intrigued by Evans, too. But he's a tiny target in the endzone. Not sure that's what we need.

If you read my entire blog you would see that I said "Possible" players that they could trade for that would stretch the feild for us. And I do think Andre Johnson is a top receiver, he's been a top WR for a few seasons now. And yes his numbers are better than Reggie Browns accross the board. Johnson AVG 94.6 Yards per game to Reggie Brown's 48.8, Johnson has scored 8 TD's this season while Brown only scored 4. Johnson's total yards were 851 to brown's 780.

Now I never said I got these from a source close to the Eagles, these are just players who have been known to Stretch the feild. Which is what our Eagles need. And yes it was talked about in the past that Roy Williams would make a good fit in the Eagles offense.

boogerking you're thinking of Andre Davis...not Andre Johnson. Johnsons been under contract

They need to give the CARDS the #19 Pick and G-Lew and considine and lito......there are plenty of DB's, DT's, in the draft and besides at least you got MAC5 some legit help.... we still have joselio,graham,sheldon,asante,dawk,mikell,reed,paschal......bring in some young DB's and safeties to shake it up...and see who loses their job.......this secondary is gonna be just fine .......

we offered them Lito and our first round pick...they wanted more and I doubt greg lewis and sean considine was who they were seeking

We never offered a first round pick, that was totally untrue. We offered Lito and a 2nd and they turned it down. If it would take Lito and a first round pick I say do it! He is a proven superstar who is only 25 come next season.

you're right...i typed the wrong thing

I agree they should throw all the chips in for this season. So if that costs them a first rounder I say do it! Its not like they've done that well in the draft to begin with, at least this move would assure them a solid player for that first round pick.

Thanks for posting.

All sources close to the Eagles said they only offered a 2nd round pick (Not a first) along with lito. While the Eagles denied that they would offer that much for a receiver that also denied attempting to sign Randy Moss.

I agree that they should be more agreessive in their approach to get Fitz, they may need their number one draft pick to seal the deal on this. We need that number on receiver so we can make a run at the super bowl and I believe they see that now.

Thanks for posting.

Yeah sorry. I had to correct that on another post, too. I checked the Texans roster and saw my mistake. DOH!

There's no chance of Andre Johnson leaving Houston. He is their offense. Without him, they have nothing.

Yea. I heard Andre DAVIS was resigned and got him confused with Johnson. By the way are you the ACTUAL Phanatic? Shoot me a dog dude!

Its true, it would be tough to pry him lose. I just thought since they're kind of trying to build that team up and teh Eagles offered them Lito along with a draft pick it may (even thought its a longshot) it may pry him away from them. I simply offered suggestions that were in the realm of possibilities. Not like Marvin Harrison or Steve smith.

Thanks for posting.

I say keep Lito in our secondary and wait until draft day and trade for OU Receiver Malcolm Kelly! He very smart, will learn the Eagles Offense very fast. Many compare this dude to Fitz anyway. He's 6'4" 219 lbs, very physical, fast, great hands and upper body strength and breaks takles very well. All in All, he's a deep threat and much better than bumb ass Reggie Brown

Lito is pissed with the Eagles and wants more money and the only way he'd stay is if they eagles gave him a better deal. Which is extremely unlikely considering the money they just shelled out to Asante, not to mention the money they'll need to give Westbrook a bigger deal.

Malcolm Kelly is a good pick up. Although no college player is a lock to play great in the NFL. Especially in this Eagles complicated offense. Besides this team doesn't allow rooks on the feild until at least their 2nd year. And with McNabb, Dawkins and Westbrook getting up in age we need all the playmakers we can get in order to get them and us the Lombardi.

Aside from Fitz i dont see any other team trading any of those recievers. I'd LOVE to have Andre Johnson over anyone on that list, but that will never happen. I agree DTRIK19 that the draft will probably be the most logical way to nab reciever, and there are alot of tall, quick guys out there this year, so who knows ...

I disagree, I really think they have been too quiet not to pull off this trade or some type of trade. They may wait till draft day trade for a WR. But ultimately I do think they see that in order for this offense to work in the way it was designed they need a wide receiver with break away speed who can stretch the feild. If not Fitz they will trade for another WR with that type of ability.

Thanks for posting.

OUR CRAZY ASS FRONT OFFICE WON'T MAKE ANY MOVES AT WR. JUST WAIT, IN THE DRAFT REID WILL TARGET OL. THEN GIVE US THAT LAME ASS " THE GUYS WE HAVE HERE WILL DO FINE" BULLSHIT. AND AS FAR AS FITZ. HE MADE IT VERY CLEAR HE WILL NOT LEAVE.

Just waiting, they are cooking some type of trade up. Like I said they've been way too quiet since signing that DE to not be trying to work some kind of deal.

Thanks for posting.

Right on, Bigfah.

Did anybody else hear Larry on 610 yesterday with Howard Eskin? Larry says the Cards would want to extend his contract to relieve some of their cap room for the next upcoming years because i think his number is somewhere around 16 million? If they don't want to sign him to a top 3 long term deal than they may be forced to move him. He says he would play in Philly, New York (Giants), New England, or pretty much anywhere else he can win. I was actually pretty surprised how much he sounded like he didn't think the deal would be done. I don't think we would see anything until closer to the draft, but it IS real and it COULD happen. Keep your fingers crossed!

Tell me what you guys think i heard him talking on the WIP 610...

I listen to 610 pretty much all day, except when Howard is on. Don't get me wrong he's obviously a host who has very good connections. I just hate how he flip flops to Andy Reids every Whim. Just the other day he said the Eagles would never sign a WR for the kind of money that Moss would be getting and that would be dumb spending that money in such a way. Then he applauded the Eagles for making an attempt to get moss. Now while I love that they finally have shown us that they do value that position. I do not like Radio Host who Flip-flop on the issues in this town.

But even though I didn't listen I can only assume by him being on there that this deal may have a better chance than people think. Many insiders believe this restructuring of Fitz contract is just another ploy for the Eagles to offer more in order to get him. Now I do realize this restructure may also be what the Cards were going to do regaurdless if they weren't going to trade him.

Thanks for posting.

You got it right. The interview didn't answer any questions so don't feel like you missed something. You can take what he said in either direction. I agree with your take. He would be just as happy to stay in AZ with a new deal as playing for the Eagles. Apparently AZ hasn't presented a new contract yet so we remain in a holding pattern. I give the Eagles credit for keeping it a possibility this long but the FO will be much more comfortable than the fans if he doesn't come here.

Hey boogerking Just curious your comment am i suppose to take it as a Good thing or No.... Just wondering not trying to argue.... Just asking

wasnt there a rumor that fitz said he didnt wanna play for the birds because they werent a playoff team, if thats true, which i doubt it is, why would he want to stay in AZ? whens the last time they made the playoffs and if that rumor is true...again, why would he stay in AZ, i still dont get the roy williams thing, i mean, its still not clear to me why we cant get him? because the lions are asking too much? how much is too much? we got stuff, lots of stuff, money cap room, draft picks, lito, we could release howard and spikes, c'mon, whats the deal? do you think if fitz signed a new contract with AZ, the birds would go after roy? i sure hope so, and again, i think lee evans and hardy would be sweeeeeet, donald driver is a bullshit rumor, the only person the packers would trade donald driver for would be westbrook, i really think something will happen for the better, the much better, the NUMBER ONE wr better, i'm very confident we'll pick someone up that will satisfy most of us(u cant please everyone) and when i say most i mean birds fans with brains, gimme any one of these guys, who gives a shit, lets just get one and get the hell outta FA!!! cant wait for the draft baby!!!! Cant wait to see the other nfc east teams burn in a mindnight green lake of fire, as westbrook and dawkins pour the gasoline till then...drive slow homey

Once draft time comes around these teams will be more willing to trade. They will lessing their asking price. The Lions want to get better and from what I hear Roy Williams doesn't want to stay in detroit. So draft time would be a more likely place for this trade to take place.

As for the Donald Driver thing, I just threw in his name as a possibility. Not as a fact, I never claimed to have insider information that would indicate me knowing that Packers may trade Driver. As I wrote in my blog these are all possibilities that I thought may have a better chance of getting done then say the Eagles getting Harrison or Steve Smith.

Thanks for the post

It seems the popular move is to trade Lito for a WR. I'm not opposed to that since Asante signed up. I personally don't see a deal being made. The only drawback in Lito returning is that without a new deal he will likely become disenfranchised with being an Eagle. As far as the WIP thing I don't think there was anything to be learned except that Burgerking (Eskin) found Fitzgerald's phone number. It's a good thing Larry would approve of a trade to philly but it isn't up to him now.

Yo trot! I think that was BS talk from people preparing themselves for Fitzgerald NOT coming here.

Well unlike us we dont write Parodies as blogs like Boogerking has done i bet most of his Information is Bogus...... I get my facts straight from the Source however you take it is your opinion ( and maybe no one elses) but if u dont agree with it or not oh well....

you might be right booger

Have fun dude. Gotta go do work.

"wasnt there a rumor that fitz said he didnt wanna play for the birds because they werent a playoff team, if thats true, which i doubt it is, why would he want to stay in AZ?"

i don't think this one is true. he told eskin during super bowl week that philly is one of the teams he would go to. and if we had a guy like fitz in 2007, we would have been a playoff team. if the eagles wouldn't have had scoring problems, they could have won all those games we lost by 4 or less points.

You listen to WIP yet you say you're not open to less than serious discussion of sports topics?! I always back up the opinions contained in my articles if given oppurtunity to. And in cases where they are purely ficticious I let you know. My advice is stick to headlines like "I am the 1000th person to report that a trade is in the works for Fitzgerald". And stop spamming your articles as comments on 10 different threads.Dammit!!

damn some fans have no faith what so ever....if u think the draft then u think wild card if you think a trade then u think superbowl...period

Nicely put....I comepletly agree Birdsfan.

Thanks for posting.

and if u think the FO wont make a move for one then u obviously are oblivious to what the randy moss offer really means...

The Eagles could trade Lito plus Kolb and a pick for Steve Smith who is wasting away in Carolina because they have QB problems. They could get disgruntled Chad Johnson God knows they need offensive playmakers. Javon Walker is still out there and if we got him healthy he could be a nice deep threat plus since he was injured we could get him at a discount price.

See Smith is a receiver that just cannot be traded for, this is why I came out with this list. Now while it is true he is wasting away in Carolina, and it would be great to get a guy like that. I just do not think that the Eagles could even come close to getting Smith via trade.

Thanks for posting.

were not trading kolb im sorry i dont see it

That's another thing, why would you trade a player that is supposed to be the QB of your future? They just drafted the kid, they would not trade him.

Thanks for posting.

Everyone just needs to have a little faith, the Eagles are trying at this point.

The were reported as possibly going after Walker, but that has settled down a bit.
They made a serious run for Moss, offered more then the Patriots did. They know he is a playmaker. The latest is with Fitzgerald, the rumors about the possible trade that could happen.

The Eagles know they need help at this position and i have faith that they will address it. They brought stallworth in during training camp. The point is it may take a while, and may drive us nuts, but something will happen to stregnthen the team.

You're correct we should have more faith. As Eagle fans we are used to being disapointed, which has made a lot of fans bitter. But I agree that this trade has a great possibility. This Eagles franchise may do a lot of things we dislike. But one thing you have to like is when they like a player enough that they have to have him on their team, they make sure the guy is on their team.

Thanks for posting

Hey birdsfan536 why won't you trade kolb, You probably never even seen him play in college? why are people so loyal to a qb they never seen play but not to one who has had us at the top 6 out of the 9 years he's been here.

I agree kolb won't see any action for a couple of years so trade him plus lito and a pick to a team that needs a QB for a WR. Plus if your going to replace McNabb can you do it with someone as studly as him.
