Looking ahead to 2008 Breakout RBs

For those of us in Keeper/Dynasty leagues, the pressure of choosing the right keeper can be massive. What's more, we're always looking for that darkhorse RB who will come out of the shadows and into Fantasy Dominance next year. Here is a list of players I believe have a chance to be that darkhorse RB in 2008 or 2009. Of course, all of these guys are question marks and many chips would have to fall into place, but who do YOU think has the best chance at being a Fantasy BEAST next year, or even years down the road. Who would YOU keep?

In no particular order:

Chris Henry, RB, Ten: 2007 Rookie backup to Lendale White and Chris Brown. Brown is rumored to be leaving in the offseason, and White may open up his own McDonalds.

Brandon Jackson, RB, GB: 2007 Rookie could have had the starting spot but lost it to Ryan Grant. Many "experts" say Jackson and Grant will still fight for the starting spot next year.

Maurice Morris, RB, SEA: Backup to the failing Shawn Alexander. Already splitting time this season and has played admirably. Rumor is Shawn could be DONE. Is he starter material?

Adrian Peterson, RB, CHI: Not THAT Adrian Peterson, this guy filled in for the abysmal Cedric Benson and splits carries with Garrett Wolfe. Good pass catcher, but is he the total package?

Pierre Thomas, RB, NO: Reggie Bush clearly cannot sustain being the single back in this offense and rumor has it they could move him to a split-end role. Thomas could be the next Deuce but what about Stecker?

Kenny Watson, RB, CIN: Great player when he had the chance. In a timeshare with Rudi Johnson and Kenny Irons is coming off injury reserve in 2008.

Jason Wright, RB, CLE: Fast, physical RB with good vision, but he's behind Jamal Lewis who had a renaissance of sorts this season. Rumor is Jamal could be traded.

So who, if any, has the best shot to be a STUD next year?

ahmad bradshaw?

yes if he splits time

Chris Henry, Brandon Jackson, Maurice Morris, pierre thomas, and Jason Whright won't even be studs.

I believe Kenny Watson will be a stud when Rudy leaves and Ap will start next year so he could be a stud

Bradshaw is a great change of pace for the Giants. The true "Thunder and Lightning" that the Giants were hoping for with Ron Dayne and Tiki Barber. I'm sure the Giants will split time, but we'll have to see if he gets burn over Derrick Ward.

If Chris Henry still blogged here I'd imagine he say he's the definite lock... but lets stay on topic. I was actually extremely impressed with Jason Wright the few times ive seen him play and would love for him to get traded just to see more playtime. Almost all these guys though are wait and see. You have to factor in how their lines block for them and create holes. A mediocre guy with a line like the Patriots is going to post more yards than if he had a line like the MIT Football team (is there actually such a thing? =)

I agree, Jason Wright did look very good. He would probably do well even with MITs line, heck, I should know, I played on it.

Would you say Jason has the best potential for 2008 or 2009? I guess it really depends on whether he or Jamal Lewis gets traded.

You played for MIT's Football team? How are the athletics programs there? My son wants to go to one of the big football programs but I want him to have an education as well.

While im watching football with my son I know the named Jason Wright came up a bunch of times, but I am not sure if its in a positive way =)

God bless.

What about Lorenzo Booker of Miami. Check out his stats the last few weeks of the season.

Well, MIT has a bunch of sports and Intramurals, but it's nowhere close to the big state school Division I football team schools. I was choosing between playing at the Div I-A schools (Ivys) and some D3 schools and I chose MIT because I knew I wouldn't be in the NFL. Sports are fun and everything, but people at MIT are there for one reason, to study, get through and pass by the skin of their teeth, and own their own company someday. Don't get me wrong, the mentality is definitly work hard, play hard, but alot of times the work side overpowers the play side.

Back to the topic. Lorenzo Booker not only has to deal with Ronnie Brown, who was the leading fantasy RB until his injury, but also Jesse Chatman, Ricky Williams and Patrick Cobbs. Unless he gets traded or the others vastly underperform, I don't see him being much of a factor in 2008

If you keep any of these guys your team probably sucks because you probably kept Michael Turner, Ladell Betts, or Jerious Norwood last year.

I'm going with Pierre Thomas as he proved that he can play the last few weeks of the season and is a better runner than Bush and can also catch out of the backfield. I wouldn't go with Chris Henry though as Lendale White ended up being a late round steal with over 1100 yards and 7 touchdowns so it's not like Henry will be stealing goal line carries.

I think MIchael Bush and Justin Fargas in Oakland could possibly break out, depending on what they decide to do with Dominick Rhodes and Lamont Jordan....

Every one of those guys is good enough to start to be honest

Michael Turner is the best backup in the league. He would easily be a top 10 back if he should ever get that opportunity.
Not likely to have a "breakout" season as long as he's on the Chargers (I think he's a restricted free agent this offseason), but he's still very good. Definitely a better back than the ones listed.

Whoever Houston PICKS up as their NEW STARTING RB, he will be good!

Well, I didn't keep Betts, Turner, or Norwood but other people in my league did. In fact, the guy who kept Turner is sitting pretty because he could be a top 10 RB next year, since he will most likely be traded. I like Pierre Thomas, but will there be a starting NFL RB named Pierre?

I hear the Seahawks may draft Rashaad Mendenhall (or however you spell it) from Illinois. that would seriously hurt Morris's chances.

basically I have room for 3 more players and I'm trying to decide between Chris Henry, Brandon Jackson, Maurice Morris, Adrian Peterson (CHI), and Jason Wright. I'm leaning towards Jackson, Morris, and Wright, but I don't think Henry is out of the question.
