GUESS THE FULL BACK or WHATEVER HAPPENED TO JOSH PARRY

Taking a break from WR my mind wandered to my favorite offensive position. Despite their virtual invisibility in the NFL I still get excited on the rare occassion that talk turns to the full back. So I did some checking on NFL.com to see to what extent the FB mattered in the league last season.

Here's what I dug up: Total no. of FBs on NFL rosters 51

Total no. that actually carried the ball at least once 31

Total carries and yds. for all FB 324 for 975 yds.

Total TD for all FB 15

Last year average FB carried 10x for 31yds and half a TD

Nine FB scored touchdowns, the most notable being Heath Evans (NE 3),Greg Jones (Jax 2),Mike Kerney (NO 2), Cecil Sapp (DEN 2), Mike Sellers (WAS 2), and four others (HOU,CHI,ATL,SEA)had 1. Thomas Tapeh had 5 carries for 18 yards,no touchdowns.

Lorenzo Neal, maybe the best known FB last year, carried 13x for 32yds and 0 TD.

Jason McKie of the Bears (yay! A Temple guy) had a TD but only carried six times.

Now there are two big aspects of the FB not taken into account with these numbers.First,blocking.The main job of a FB in any system.Secondly, short yardage downs. The 22 FB who didn't score are splitting up 377 total yards of offense. Carey Davis(PIT) and Leonard Vickers(CLE) are the head of the class here.Conversely, there were 11 guys who had less than 10 yards all year.

So there's the numbers. FB are situational guys when it comes to moving the ball; it's hard to judge their worth without seeing everything they do on the field.I'd like to think it could be a key position in today's NFL and it would seem five or six teams agree.

Oh,as for Josh Parry: He was a Seahawk last season. CAR 0 YDS 0 TD 0

haha love the post...always nice to see articles loaded with stats. The only thing that I would say in defense for fullbacks everywhere is what they do usually doesn't show up in the statbooks. A formal definition states

"Most plays utilizing the fullback call for him to block, generally by running up the middle of the line, clearing a path for a running back to use."

of the teams you listed...check out their running backs statistics

Den, SD, Jax, Wash, NO, and NE all have better than average running games. I didn't see any mention of the Steelers and Dan Kreider either. Hes a beast for their running game, ask Willie.

Great post, but numbers aren't nearly as important at the FB position. Most formations do not even call for a fullback anymore either...but a good one is sure nice to have one a short yardage or goal line situation!

Kreider had 1carry for 2 yards. He is listed on IR.Dating back to when,I don't know. But yeah,I love the blocking, too. When that FB blows open a hole and a speed back flys through for big yards, man it's GREAT! I was mainly curious about TD numbers league wide. I found them a little dissappointing but fans of teams with good FB understand the role they play and their importance to the running game even if someone else is carrying the ball.I like that JAX has one of the better FB.They have a scary ground attack.

How long has it been since a team has had a guy like Alstott in his younger years though? The steelers used to...they just called him The Bus (when he was old). Schmitt could be that guy

Owen Schmitt could definitely fit the bill.We were talking at work about the Eagles not having, and possibly not needing, a "third down back". I think a FB fills that role nicely. Sure, you have to acquire one that can actually carry the ball, but he's not going to require as many touches as #2 RB want these days.Alstott and the Bus were amazing and as they got older, particular Bettis, they were comfortable with being situational players because they were still REALLY good in short yardage situations.Players like that don't come around often.Possibly Schmitt's the next one.Curious to see where he goes.I'm hoping the Eagles take a FB at some point in the draft. We still have Nate Ilaoa so I doubt they'll do it.

is Ilaoa still on the practice squad?

You know what? I'm wrong.According to Wikipedia (an amazing resource for player specifics for some reason) Ilaoa was cut altogether on sept.1 2007 and then promptly signed with the Columbus Destroyers of the AFL.I'll check that out in a minute. Incredibly he started as a wideout at Hawaii before moving to RB and finally getting drafted as a FB.

Ok Dtrik, here's some more incredible Ilaoa news.He IS on the Destroyers but he's hurt and hasn't played yet.His Eagles performance consisted of four preseason games where he had 23 carries/57 yds and 6 catches/55 yds. He holds Hawaii's all time yardage record for RB catches AND was 12th in the nation for all purpose RB yds per game after his senior year.As a side note, Columbus is a pretty good arena team and he'll probably win a championship before the other Eagles he was drafted with :) If there's anything else I can say about Nate Ilaoa we both probably don't need to know.
