Possible Weapons for Eagles in '08

The following article looks at the players the Eagles could potentially go after this off-season.

I'm a die hard Eagles and while I hate the rival Giants and Cowboys, I still have respect for the team and their fans. They want to win just as much as we do. Although, there is something that's really bugging me and that is whenever fans are called delusional. The truth is, nearly all fans are delusional. Everyone who is a fan of an above average team thinks they have the best chance to win and/or thinks there team will be able to do things that other teams won't be able to do in the off-season. Most recently, I heard a Cowboy fan call an Eagles fan delusional for thinking that Larry Fitzgerald could be in an Eagles uniform next year. Is there absolutely no chance Larry Fitzgerald could come to Philly next year? Of course not. It could happen and the Eagles could be just as good as the Cowboys were this year, next year. Let's flip this around. Who were we, Eagles fans, to say that the Cowboys had no chance making the playoffs this year or last? My point is, hate the team, hate everything about them but don't be angry at a fan wishing for brighter days ahead.

Now, about the potential weapons for the Eagles next year.

Players that may possibly be on the Trading Block:

Alge Crumpler - I sure would hate to be a Falcons fan. They are, by far, the team in the worst situation for the 2008 season. Crumpler, a 7-year veteran, suffered through possibly the worst season of his career last year accumulating only 444 yards to go with 5 TDs. That is a career low for receiving yards if you exclude his rookie year. The next time the Falcons will be in playoff contention may be three or four years down the road, at which time, Crumpler will be 34 years old and not much of threat to opposing defenses. So, it may be best for the Falcons to unload him for a decent return package while they still can. As for the Eagles, Crumpler would most definitely be an upgrade over L.J. Smith and good target for McNabb over the middle.

(Potential Cost: 3rd Round Pick)

Chad Johnson - Eagles fans would love to see "Ocho Cinco" come to Philly. If he were to do so, there may be just as much hype for the 2008 season as there was when T.O. came in '04. Although, I find this to be extremely improbable as he'd cost a couple high draft picks, something the Eagles may not find expendable. From Cincinnati's perspective, they already have T.J. Housmanzadeh and Chris Henry and may be willing to let go of Chad Johnson to help draft players to fix their D.

(Potential Cost: 1st Round Pick and 3rd Round Pick)

Derrick Mason - Mason had an amazing season this year considering he is in the latter period of his solid career, having over 100 receptions and 1,000 yards receiving. Sadly, the 100 receptions may have come due to the fact that the Ravens' O was one of the worst in the league with a lot of Mason's receptions being for only five yards or so. The Ravens may be in a period of rebuilding and if they are, they may want to get rid of Mason. While not the Chad Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald, Derrick Mason would be a great addition to Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown, giving the Eagles three solid WRs.

(Potential Cost: 4th Round Pick)

Donte Stallworth - If the Patriots decide to let Stallworth go by not paying him the $6 Million option he is owed, in order to afford Randy Moss, he may be another WR the Eagles could go after. He did spend the 2006 season with us, so he's already familiar with the offense but there may be some unresolved issues between he and the Eagles' FO that may prevent from him coming back.

Javon Walker - It seems as though Javon Walker is upset once again and wants to be traded. With Brandon Marshall's monster season, I don't see why Denver would be inclined to keep this injury prone WR. Javon Walker has #1 potential but if he can't stay healthy, he's worthless. Eagles were reportedly interested in him at the time he was dealt to the Broncos, perhaps they'll be interested again.

(The Packers traded him away for a 2nd Round Pick. If anything, his value has dropped since then. Potential Cost: 3rd Round Pick)

Larry Fitzgerald - The Cardinals are loaded at WR with Anquan Boldin, Fitz, and Bryant Johnson. If the Cards decide to bring back Bryant Johnson, whom I find to be very underrated, they may feel the need to let go of Fitzgerald to get a high draft pick to help other areas of the team. Obviously, like Chad Johnson, Fitzgerald would be a major pickup for the Eagles.

(Potential Cost: 1st Round Pick and 3rd Round Pick)

Shaun McDonald - McDonald had a good year with 79 receptions, 943 receiving yards, and 6 TDs. So, why would the Lions want to trade him? Well, they already have Calvin Johnson who has more potential to be the best WR in the league and Roy Williams who has already proven he is a top ten WR.

(Potential Cost: 3rd Round Pick)

For all of you Eagles fan who watch Post Game Live or Daily News Live, you've probably heard enough of Dallas Clark and Bernard Berrian. They'll most likely be the top players on the free agent market (forget about Randy Moss) and command the most money. I, personally, feel that the Eagles will not be aggressive enough to sign either of the players which is why I think the Eagles are more likely to pull a trade.

Offensive weapons that the Eagles could target on the Free Agent Market

1. Dallas Clark

2. Bernard Berrian

3. D.J. Hackett

4. Bryant Johnson

5. Andre Davis

Defensive weapons that the Eagles could target on the Free Agent Market

1. Jared Allen

2. Travis LaBoy

3. Drayton Florence

4. Madieu Williams

5. Randall Gay

What I would like to see the Eagles do:

Just a note. The Eagles may pick a compensatory pick for letting go of Jeff Garcia last season.

1. Release Jevon Kearse, Darren Howard, Sean Considine, and Hank Baskett; let go of L.J. Smith, William James, and Greg Lewis; resign Thomas Tapeh.

2. Trade 3rd Round Pick to Atlanta for TE Alge Crumpler. Great redzone target.

3. Trade 4th Round Pick to Baltimore for WR Derrick Mason. Need the veteran leadership.

4. Sign HOU WR Andre Davis to 2-year deal. Deep threat (17 YPC) and great returner (3 TDs return TDs last season).

5. Sign KC DE Jared Allen to 4-year deal. Sack-master that would be a great force opposition to Trent Cole.

6. Sign TEN DT Randy Starks to 1-year deal. Good backup DT.

7. Draft CB/S Malcolm Jenkins of Ohio State in the 1st round. Jenkins has the chance of being an immediate impact player. He played CB in for the Buckeyes but, according to draft experts, has the potential to an NFL Safety.

8. Draft WR Adrian Arrington of Michigan in the 2nd round. Right now, he's projected as a 2nd round pick and if that's stays true up 'til draft day, the Eagles should take a chance with him.

2008 Potential Lineup

QB - Donovan McNabb

I like an eagle fan who has the time to analyze and breakdown potential scenarios for '08, however as an Eagle fan out on New Mexico, I had the chance to watch Hank Baskett for 4 years in college. He is a winner, and showed flashes his rookie year(against the hated cowgirls-87 yd TD). Not to mention he comes with a nice price tag, gives us a big body who can go up for the ball (MWC high jump champ), and seemed to have a nice chemistry with DMAC his rookie year. I feel that he is just under utilized.

I too am a die hard Eagle fan from New Mexico & agree 100% about Baskett, underused especially in the the redzone! I was in Philly when he played outstanding against the cowgirls! Letting him go would be a huge mistake, if anything keep him & let Avant go!

da eagles should get these guys
1.reggie smith ss
2.antoine cason cb
3.lb from Penn state
4.maybe the notre dame te

I agree with most of this. My notes are:

1. Derrick Mason would be a mistake. Albeit a very good WR, I perceive him as being on the decline of his career. His best days are behind him.
2. Fitzgerald may be more of a possibility than people realize. The Cards are shopping him and his age and all around talents make him a perfect target of the organization. McNabb would post another plus 100 WB rating!
3. Baskett has to stay. He will bud into a good receiver.
4. Gotta release Kearse. Thank you for your years and bye bye.
5. RELEASE CONSINDINE NOW!!! Glad to see I am not the only person who realizes he is our TEAM'S BIGGEST PROBLEM!
6. Get a backup for BDawk. He still played at a high level this year, but can't have too many years left in the tank.
7. Stallworth won't come back. We wouldnt pay to keep him we def. will not pay to get him back.
8. Chad Johnson won't come here. His relationship with Me-Yo (T.O.) will not allow it.
9. Although Crumpler is a great target, unless we lose LJ in free agency, we don't need him. Our current TE's with LJ and including Celek's progression, is fine.
10. It's time to get another backup at left tackle. Runyan can't have too much left either, and we saw that Justice has no chance at left tackle going against the NFL's best pass rushers who mostly play that end. (Osi made that clear)

I also think Avant needs more time. I think he has the potential to be at least as good as Reggie Brown, and Brown is a great number 2 receiver...he's just not quite a number one.

1. Derrick Mason is on the decline, liked I mentioned in the article, but that means that he would come cheap. A fourth-rounder for Mason would be a great deal for the Eagles to make.
2. Fitzgerald is a possiblity but if we got him, we'd have a hard time signing other free agents like Jared Allen. I'd not only like to get the O help but also help for the D.
3. I was either going to keep Avant or Baskett and I ended up choosing Avant. It's not that I don't like Baskett, it's just that if we were to bring in new WRs, we'd also have to give up some of our current WRs.
4. Agree.
5. Agree. Very overrated player. Michael Lewis should have never lost his spot to Considine to begin with.
6. Malcolm Jenkins may be able to fill that role. Kenny Phillips is another possibility.
7. I don't forsee that happening either.
8. But he isn't the locker room disaster that T.O. is. If the Eagles find a deal to their liking, I think they'll pull the trigger to get him.
9. There's no way L.J. will want to come back. We're going to have to find a new starting TE (preferably a veteran) and I don't think it's Celak.
10. Todd Herremans might be able to fill that role. Max Jean-Gilles dominated in the last two games. I think that he will be the starting LG at the beginning of next season. That would allow Todd Herremans to move back to T and allow him takeover LT in '09 when William Thomas will likely retire. Winston Justice didn't look too bad in the final game against Buffalo. Perhaps, he's better off playing RT over LT.

1. While I agree with you, the franchises decision-making normally goes towards finding young talent at wideout. Whether I agree with the philosophy or not, they probably wouldn't make a deal for a declining wide receiver who has never played in the WCO.
2.Fitgerald is the best option-i think everyone agrees on that. However, looking at his contract, he is scheduled to make 14.6 million of his 20 million guaranteed, this coming season. Which is why the Cards are shopping him in the first place. We only have a reported 15-17 million in cap space, which would go up slightly with the release of Kearse, but you are right, if we get Fitgerald, our free agent signings will be all but over.
3.If either Avant or Baskett, I would probably choose Baskett. However, some consideration has to be given to whether or not Kevin Curtis actually fits into the scheme. I'm not so sure he does. Certainly not as a wideout, but he would be a good slot receiver...However, that is a lot of money to pay a #3, especially without a bonafide number 1.
4.Agree with your agree...lol
5.Agree completely. Lewis should still be here. He made mistakes but at least I didn't have to see him bouncing off of running backs shoulders or missing assignments in the middle of the field.
6.Not sure about either player.
7.Agree with your agree.
8.Im not disputing the effect he would have if he were here, I am thinking he would not even consider it with what happened with his friend T.O. It would be like dating your best friend's ex-wife...you just don't do it.
9.Don't be so sure about LJ. I think he realizes that his best success will be in Philly. When healthy, he is targeted as much as the elite TE's in the NFL.
10. Agree with Herremans and Jean-Gilles who I would love to see get more time at guard. With him, Andrews, and Jackson, we could open some serious holes in the middle. Didn't get to see Justice against Buffalo but I do think he would be better at RT against weaker pass rushers (Especially if Strahan retires). Also, that would take him off of McNabb's weakside so if beat, McNabb would at least see it coming.

Great posts man. You have good ideas and good knowledge of the team. I guess we just have to stay tuned. Also, what is this about Harbaugh getting interviewed?

Thanks for the compliment. Harbaugh is reportedly being interviewed for the Ravens' head coaching job. I don't think it will happen, though. Rex Ryan or Marty Schottenheimer seem more likely to get the job.

I agree about Mason solid but not a number 1 receiver, we need a number 1 who is big and physical, who puts fear in opposing D's(the way T.O. used to) I'm talking about Ocho Cinco, Fitzgerald or Walker in that order! Then Brown on the opposite side with Curtis in the slot, what an unstoppable trio at WR! With Westbrook in the backfield and a healthy McNabb ,If LJ returns or we can somehow sign Crumpler we definately have top O in the league!

I like some of what you're saying, I like Crumpler, and the CJ and the Fitz suggestions. Mason I don't really like and I also like Clark. But I don't think the Eagles can get both Clark and Allen. plus I think KC might tag Allen. Berrian not for this team. I don't know if the Eagles are willing to give up whatever Arizona or Cinci would demand in a trade for their big weapons. Philly is cheap and too concerned with the cap situation, to go all out on a play maker.

For the draft I like Jenkins, I also like Aqib Talib, McKelvin, and Rodgers-Cromartie. WR I like Adarius Bowman, Limas Sweed, James Hardy, Eddie Royal, and look out for Jordy Nelson, . But over all i like your thoughts. I hope we get ride of Considine, Mahe, Kearse, Reagor, Howard, McDougle, all the dead weight and M.A.S.H. unit players.

NIce work, but HELL no to Derrick Mason, he is not what we need. We need a guy like Fitz, or Chad, or Roy Williams. Even Berrian isn't the guy. He's still that second-tier reciever, like Curtis or Brown already are. We a BONIFIED #1.

Andre Davis is a good idea, but wouldnt you rather see us sign UFA Michael Turner from SD for backup RB and kickoff returns, then trade Buck, Kearse, and a pick for a WR like Fitz or Chad? I know that Turner dude is what I want to see in Eagles green.

Jared Allen, for sure a great idea, but he may want too much cash- remains to be seen.

Release Hank? Not smart, I think if they put him in more sets, he could catch 50-60 big-time balls. I like keepin Hank on the squad. Plus, he works out wit Donny in AZ through the off-season.

Releasing Considine is dumb. If you're gonna get rid of him, use him in a trade because he definately has value to teams like AZ and Cincy. Same with Howard and Kearse, you shop those guys, you dont just cut them loose and get nothing.

And honestly, you're too happy about giving away draft picks... we've drafted big-time players in all rounds throughout Reid's tenure. I like the idea in a few deals yes, but not all deals. You shop some players you have to teams who need their position depth, and hopefully those same teams have something for you.

How can you say that I'm too happy trading away picks when I decided to trade away only the third and fourth round picks instead of a first and third (that we would need to get CJ or Fitz)? There just aren't enough playmakers on the free agent market to spread around, so we'll have to make a deal and most all deals include draft picks nowadays. And trust me, Considine and Kearse wouldn't get us more than a 6th round pick each. We got Takeo for a 6th, Kearse couldn't possibly be worth more after sitting out practically the whole season.

Derrick Mason is not the big playmaker that we need. I think Larry Fitzgerald or Javon Walker is the only big player we can get, Fitsgerald being #1 option. I think we could also use some help at both safety positions and outside linebacker.

Once again, if you make a trade for someone like Chad Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald, you'll end up keeping yourself from filling other needed areas (large contracts coming from both players) plus you'll take away a possible star that we'd get in the first round and third round.

Perhaps, Derrick Mason was a bad idea considering everyone is opposed to it (although, I think that is due to the fact that everybody wants that superstar WR, as do I...I just don't know if it's a real possibility). The reason I choose him is because he'd come cheap and you'd know what to expect from him, unlike a player off the market like Bernard Berrian, D.J. Hackett, or Bryant Johnson.

The Eagles do have alot of picks this year, 8 as of now, and will likely get 2-4 compensatory picks as well. That does make it easier to trade some away. We've drafted some gems in later rounds though, like B-West especially, 3rd rounder.

DJ Hackett would be a good fit, he's in the same system too in Seattle. I honestly think the Eagles will trade for a big name WR. They have to hear the public, and their own QB for cryin out loud. You dont think, with Cincy's defense, they wouldnt take Kearse, Howard, and a 3rd round pick for Chad?

They probably would. Or Kearse, Howard, Considine, and a 5th round pick?

Arizona needs depth in the secondary too, Considine and Sheldon Brown, along with a 2nd round pick, for Fitz. Then we can sign Trufant or Florence, or Randal Gay.

There are plenty of options to get that star WR we need.

I'm 99.9% positive we'd have to give up a 1st rounder in order to get Larry Fitzgerald or Chad Johnson. It seems as though you think Kearse is worth a 1st round pick. He isn't what he was three years ago and even a year ago. Kearse, Howard, and Considine and a 5th round pick would not do it. Cincy or Arizona would want a player they know has a chance to turn into a superstar. Neither Chad Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald have come out and said they want to be traded, so they don't have to give either one up. The Eagles won't be the only team looking to get either WRs. Trading for a player is like an auction. Teams will constantly offer more and more for a player, making their value go up. It will come down to the team that offers the most and doubt that, that will be the Eagles.

One note: Chad Johnson has hinted about it, feeling that he is being blamed for the franchises problems.

There are plenty of options to get that star WR we need, while still keeping our defense in tact through free agency and the draft.

Yeah, you made some good points, it will be interesting.

Chad Johnson's contract is as follows:

Signed a six-year, $35.5 million contract. The deal included a $5 million signing bonus.
Johnson counts $8 million against the cap in 2007. 2007:$2.5 million (+ $250,000 workout bonus + $3.5 million option bonus + $1.5 million reporting bonus),
2008: $3 million (+ $250,000 workout bonus)
2009: $4.5 million )+ $250,000 workout bonus)
2010: $5 million (+ $250,000 workout bonus)
2011: $6 million (club option)
2012: Free Agent

He would only count 3 million against the cap next year!!! For a talent of his magnitude, that is a very cap friendly contract. Especially when compared to the 14.6 million cap hit Fitgerald brings next year! So, we could get Chad and Jared Allen and still have some cap room left, but if we go after Fitzgerald and don't renegotiate, our FA signings are over!

I def do not want derrick mason but I do believe that Larry Fitzgerald is a real possibility. Some people don't realize this but the eagles have 30 million dollars of free cap space this year which means they can go out and sign a lot of players but they are just too damn cheap to do so. I would rather them draft fred davis out of usc than get alge crumpler and i also would like to have jared allen. regarding the RT+LT spot, they should move todd herimans out to LT and keep justice at RT because thats what his position was in college.

Next, Malcolm Jenkins isn't coming out this year, it was just released. I don't think they should get rid of considine if they don't have too. he may be better at free safety instead of strong. Regarding the basket release. Im not too sure, he did look good his rookie season and the eagles are in need of a big tarket in the red zone, i think they should give him one more year and if he underachieves next year then get rid of him. I definintely agree with the kearse and howard releases because they were both busts and if they don't get allen they need to look at that spot in the draft.

Eagles don't have 30 million in cap space. The number is closer to 15 million.

I agree with Kearse's release, but I am not sure about Howard. He played well at tackle this year which gives us some flexibility on the line and the ability to rest Patterson and Bunkley and still get a pass rush.

1. hank baskett is one of the best special teams players on the team and he has potential to develop into a game breaker given the right circumstances (chad johnson's addition will help)
2. kearse is coming off an injury. next year he still can make an impact as a situational pass rusher. restructure his contact.
3. restructure takeo spikes contact (he's due $5 mil next year)
4. jared allen wants freeney type money...the eagles aren't going to spend that for him.
5. get chad johnson! he a playmaker and will make kevin curtis even better. mcnabb only had one playmaker and they made it to the super bowl, imagine what he'll do with 2 (johnson and curtis-not to mention westbrook)
6. d-mason is on the decline. he no better than what reggie brown could be)
7. re-sign lj smith (he shouldn't be too expensive due to the year he had)
8. larry fitzgerald would be a great addition the only problem is HE'S DUE $14 MIL NEXT YEAR!
9. people are sleeping on tom zbikowski for notre dame...he would be a good player to groom for when dawkins steps down, not to mention, he's a dangerous punt returner.
10. getting a return man should be a high priority as well. the eagles struggled with field position all year!

llhhaammii - Good points dude, I like your analysis.

thanx man

i agree with llhhaammii exept for the keep l.j. he's still good but brent celek (when he played) proved that he could be their dangerous target over the middle. He's 6'4" and 255 puonds. Let him have his breakout year in '08. Also, i would love to see Chad Johnson in Philly, BUT, we all saw what the last big name receiver that had an attitude did to the franchise, it would be safer to go with someone like bernard berrian, or larry fitzgerald. If they were to sign Chad Johnson they should sign him for a 1 or 2 year deal with as little money as he would go for and if he's behaving and producing then give him a better contract. McNabb will be possible the most dangerous quarterback in the league with someone like chad johnson, bernard berrian, or larry fitzgerald on the roster not just to give him a weapon, but to open up keviin curtis, and reggie brown. Defenses already have their eyes on westbrooks every move, they wont be able to stop or even contain westbrook with another big name guy.
With the Jared Allen thing, see how much he wants, if he's asking for too much then dont sign him annd hand the job over to Juqua Thomas, keep in mind in the 07 season, he average 4.5 sacks a game.

LJ Smith is still a good player. A healthy Smith make Celek better, 2 dangerous TE is better than 1 (possible-Celek is still unproven). Manning has Clark and Ben Utecht.
Smith has had 2 solid years before this injury plagued season. Plus he is one of DMac favorite targets (he's an excellent checkdown receiver) Dallas Clark is going to demand a large sum of money and if the plan (as everyone would like) is to go after Johnson or Fitzgerald then signing Clark would be a problem (not to mention Manning might veto letting him go causing the team to resign him)

Jared Allen had 15.5 sacks this year not 4.5 per game (which would have easily broke records). I believe they should put Gocong on the end as a situational pass rusher along with Kearse (after restructuring his deal)
Start Spikes at SAM, Gaither at WILL (which will allow him to flow in open space) and start Bradley in the middle (he has the potential to be an Urlacer type player).

I think Berrian is a good player BUT is he and upgrade? Reggie Brown had 61 rec for 780 yds and 4 TD's; Berrian had 71 rec for 951 and 5 TD's. Is that much of an upgrade? Not really. An argument might be Berrian is a big play guy well, Brown averaged 12.8 yds per catch and Berrian averaged 13.4...Berrian has a name, but if it's a serious upgrade or a legitimate threat you want Johnson fits that bill and that deal is realistic. Larry Fitzgerald is not. He's due almost $15mil next year on top of the extraordinary price the Cards will want. Concievably, a 2 rounder and a good player (like Considine) could make that deal simply because Houshmandzadeh has become the no.1 guy there and Chris Henry is a capable receiver. Johnson is on the outside in this situation. The coach, the fans, the QB...none will shed a tear if he left.

you people need to stop reciting what you read off other peoples rumor sites and actually listen to yourselves talk...jared allen? yeah the eagles wont pay Westbrook what he deserves but they will go after allen, and Chad Johnson?? seriously? get real never gonna happen. l.j. sucks, hank basket looks like hes running under water, and thomas tapeh couldnt block in most high schools down south... REBUILD

REBUILD? Just like that huh? Rebuild? I guess you want to go through what the Cowboys went through, years of rebuilding or the 49ers or the Dolphins. How about the Falcons?!? The Redskins...the Vikings...Chiefs, Jets...THEY ARE ALL TEAMS REBUILDING!

I know I, as an Eagles fan, do not want to go through what those teams are going through. And I'm sure most of the Eagles fans here agree. To rebuild doesn't happen in a year or an offseason and with the salary cap, you just can't get rid of everyone and sign all new stars!

IMPROVEMENT IS THE WORD, NOT REBUILD...AND HOW DO YOU IMPROVE? WELL, YOU ADD PIECES!

Chad would only be a 3 mill hit on the cap. Very do-able. AND Cincy needs Defense. BAD. We have defensive depth across the board really, when healthy that is.

Jared Allen will never happen, you're right. He wants too much cash.

how about eli manning? ROFLMAO

llhhaammii...ever see alex smiths high school and college highlight films?? and would you want him next to a football let alone throwing one for your team?? get real pal...its about producing day in and out in the nfl and to waste a 1st round on this guy would be almost as bad as last years draft...corner or DE would be alot more helpful...
