Reigning MVP Out, Engram Questionable for Seahawks

The Seahawks will play this weekend without Shaun Alexander (last year's MVP) and possibly Bobby Engram. Coach Mike Holmgren declared Alexander out on Wednesday after calling him "iffy" on Monday. This will be Alexander's second missed start in a row do to the crack in his foot. Engram is listed as questionable for Sunday's game versus their division rival St. Louis due to an illness.

Since Alexander will miss this start Maurice Morris will make his second consecutive start for the 'Hawks. He started 2 weeks ago versus the Chicago Bears and ran for 35 yards on 11 attempts with no touchdowns. Not a very impressive first start for Morris but you need to realize that he was playing one of the best defenses in the NFL and also that the Seahawks trailed that whole game so they were throwing to try and catch up. This week Morris is facing a St. Louis defense that allows 120.6 rushing yards per game (20th in the league), so expect Morris to have more yards. Remember last week BACKUP Noah Herron of Green Bay put up 106 yards and a touchdown on St. Louis so it doesn't take a pro-bowl caliber RB to put up yards against St. Louis. Also if Engram is out they may try to run a little more since that puts them at 3 good WR instead of 4. I think Morris will be a good start if you have a flex spot in your league or if you have Alexander and some of your other backs are on bye weeks. My prediction: 80 yards and a TD.

If Engram doesn't start on Sunday expect D.J. Hackett to see the playing time instead. With Engram out Deion Branch is likely to see his first start opposite of Darrell Jackson. Don't forget they also have Nate Burleson so they are not really hurting at the wide receiver position, unless you take into account that Engram had some of the best hands on the team as he was often thrown to on third down. Hackett isn't worth a pick up in fantasy leagues at all but the values of Jackson, Branch and Burleson all go up slightly because they will have more balls thrown their way.

The Seahawks started out hot as they crushed the Giants. I remember how they were touted as being the best team in the league for a couple weeks. Then Chicago crushed them, and the focus has shifted. Seattle is stilla very talented and deep team, but I believe that even with Alexander they are not quite the team everyone hypes them to be.

Yes, it goes deeper than Alexander. Burleson is playing with a cast on his hand. The OLine has struggled. Hasselback has struggled. It's just very hard for a team that goes so deep into the playoffs to come back and start the season well.

From a fantasy perspective, I wouldn't be surprised if Maurice Morris had a big game. 35 yards on 11 carries doesn't sound like much, but he probably looked like the best player the Seahawks had on offense in their loss to the Bears (which also isn't saying much, but I don't think Shaun Alexander would have had better numbers). The Seahawks have their problems, but they might be the best team in the NFL at beating up on subpar teams. They'll bounce back big against St. Louis.
