Should/Could Priest Holmes Sue Shawne Merriman?

Yesterday, it was reported that Priest Holmes would be reporting to camp this year with the Chiefs. It's good to see Priest getting back into camp, because at one point, he was the most dominant running back in the game. I live in San Diego and the morning station was making a big deal about Holmes' return. Why? Frequent call in guest Shawne Merriman delivered the hit that was thought to end Priest's career. Merriman even gets a little giddy when he discusses the hit.

Now America has done it's part to crucify Barry Bonds, but the Merriman steroids story got swept under the rug last year. When Merriman tested positive, it was reported, albeit quietly, that the positive test stemmed from an actual Anabolic steroid rather than an over the counter stimulant.

It's making for a nice comeback story, but most likely, Holmes will never be able to return to his dominant level of play. I wonder, are there any legal ramifications to Merriman's hit? Now football injuries happen and that's to be understood. What about convicted cheaters though? Merriman can be accused of breaking both the rules of the league and Federal law as well. Could Priest (who was one of the highest paid players in the league at the point), sue Merriman for loss of income. Is there some kind of unwritten rule between the players in the league? Is that rule wiped away when one of the players is using steroids? Should Holmes sue Merriman? Can Holmes sue Merriman?

Thats deep Todd. Maybe ESPN's legal analyst, Roger Cossack, needs a Yardbarker blog.

You need to change the headline on your column page to "Deep Thoughts by Todd." Merriman definitely got off lightly, but Priest would have no case against him here. His best shot would be to sue the NFL for letting Merriman play, but even that is a one in a mllion longshot.

Na, Merriman has a rule named after him; the NFL and its fans will always remeber Shawn as the tainted Pro Bowler...

All I know is that Merriman will never have a year like he had last year. That will be the best year of his career and he messed it up by not paying attn to some bottles. Thats sad.

great post shawn merriman can go suck a nut

Well, if Priest does, in fact, sue Merriman or the NFL, it would open the door for Bo Jackson to sue former Bengals player, Kevin Walker, for injuring his hip in the 1990 playoff game.

And, not sure if you guys have seen Merriman or not...but he's a beast. Last season will definitely NOT be the last you hear of him. He will become an annual attendee for the Pro Bowl.

Great article! Merriman is such an a-hole, reminds me of Romanowski when he was still in the league...On top of that Priest is such a great guy! Shows you have naive and ignorant the media is when they hop on one athlete and crucify him for one thing and then let the other go free. Ridic

If he does it will open a can of worms for the whole NFL and players that have been injured or players that have injured other players....I dont think Priest will comeback and play like he did before he was injured but I really hope he can make the team and play well for the Chiefs this season....I have been a huge fan of Priest when he played college ball...Just too bad no team gave him a chance until the Chiefs did and by then it was too late to make history or for him to get into the HOF, which he would have made if the Ravens would have given him the chance when he played for them....

this blog is quite possibly one of the stupidest things i have ever read. Priest Holmes was hit in Oct of 2005. Merriman was suspended in Oct 2006. You don't think they tested him the year before? There was no proof that he was on steroids that year so it is ridiculous to even speculate about a lawsuit. It's football guys. It's a physical sport and people do get hurt.
