The Cowboys May Get McFadden? Cowboys/Dolphins Discussing a Deal for the Top Pick

ESPN's Chris Mortensen suggested during a special edition of Sunday NFL Countdown that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is eyeing the possibility of swinging a trade with the Dolphins for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 draft.

Such a deal would allow the 'Boys to bag running back Darren McFadden, who played college football at Jones' alma mater of Arkansas.

Per Mort, any such deal would have to include the rights to Cowboys running back Marion Barber, who is slated to be a restricted free agent. To make it happen, the Cowboys would have to work out a sign-and-trade deal before Barber gets a chance to ink an offer sheet that would force the Cowboys to match the terms or let him go in exchange for compensation. Thus, the safest bet for the 'Boys would be to tender Barber at the highest possible level, which would force any team that signs him to give up a first-round pick and a third-round pick. Those extra picks then could be used to sweeten the pot for the top spot in the draft.

This would be a great move by Miami! Marion Barber and Ronnie Brown would give the Dolphins one of the most powerful one-two punches in the league and would alone make them a threat in the AFC. Not to mention Parcells could get more weapons with the no.22 and 28 picks from Dallas.

Jones covets McFadden, and it seems he is willing to do whatever is necessary to get him.

Jerry Jones...remember Ricky Williams and Mike Ditka? How did that work out for them?

Trade a Pro Bowl running back for a RB that has never played a down and will demand $60 million or more? That doesn't sound like the recipe for success.

It really doesn't sound like a recipe for success, but that's what happens when you get caught up with hype.

...it would be a great move on Miami's end though...

Great move for the Dolphins if it were to happen. I've had this discussion with friends before, but if I had the #1 pick, I would trade down 99% of the time. The pick pans out only a percentage of the time, a gamble magnified by the millions of dollars organizations are forced to pay that player, and teams offer not only established players for it, but draft picks. I wouldn't be surprised if the Dolphins could get the Cowboys #1 this year and next, Marion Barber and a 3rd or 4th round pick. One player won't change the Dolphins, so why not entertain the thought of trading down?

Are u kidding me!!! The cowboys are not Minnesota jackass!!!!

I'll be very disappointed if Jerry and the 'Boys do this. There are far more pressing issues on the team than the running back position.

agreed...sounds attractive to get a stud like McFadden, but how can DAL part with Barber?...the guy is proven and nasty...besides, McFadden could be injury prone like, say, Maroney

I would stick with the two first round draft picks and keep Barber. They can get a good cornerback, receiver and possibly Felix Jones with those picks. Would McFadden make that much difference? Don't get me wrong, would love to have his talent here, but may have to give up too much to get him. We can add the two draft picks to an already young team and make it better overall, not just at the running back position.

Agreed. I'd love to see them get some secondary help for sure. And if they want to add to the offense, a WR to fill the void most likely coming when Glenn leaves or even someone to help out on the line would be much better.

Dallas doesn't need to be mortgaging the future on one player. We did that in the 90's with Deion and suffered for years after because he put us out of cap money. Would much rather have three or four good players that could help both the defense and offense rather than one.

Remember, we're talking Jerry Jones here...the only thing he loves as much as Dallas is the Univ of Arkansas...to get the one of the best players in Arkansas history, he will mortgage the future. (especially with the success of Adrian Peterson)

Jerry Jones, you eyes are bigger than your belly! But hey...if he makes the move credit the chess master Bill Parcells. He built the team back up and is single handedly tearing it back down!

Parcells or T.O.? Match point Parcells!

Hindsight is 20/20

Not sure Parcells is tearing it down. We already have replacements in place for the coaches that are leaving and a very young team. We'll see about Parcells and where his mighty Dolphins go. All he did here was hold T.O. back. Garrett came in and turned him loose and let him play. I will give Parcells credit for helping build the team, but his coaching days are over. Looks like the hindsight could be up in the N.E. somewhere.

sounded like a good GM there...it's a good team-building philosphy to have...that's why NE keeps Pioli locked in bowels of Gillette...half of NFL teams know that this is a Management path to success (i.e. getting 4 goods instead of 1 bank-busting great), and so amazing to me that the other half of NFL teams still go for the hired gun and shred the future...and one of those teams was MINN for Herschel...and I know you digged that outcome...that might not be accurate to say that about the DAL-MINN trade due to free agency now...or is it?...but, real good point

Oh come on Philly, I'd love to see Jerry give up the farm for McFadden. Just imagine what he'd look like in dreads at the press conference discussing how he gave away his proven punishing back plus 2#1's for this kid. this is when Jerry and Dan Snyder seem to have a lot in common.

Oh, Dan Snyder is a Jerry Jones wanna-be. We all know that. Jerry is a pretty well-respected owner around the NFL. At least we are not -$17M in cap money and cannot afford to improve our football team.

THe only way Dfad wont be one of the top runningbacks next year is if he gets hurt... I think this pick would be a very good pick in the long run for the boys....

The running back position is a gamble...you could get Adrian Peterson or Cedric Benson with one roll of the dice.

McFadden is a lot closer to Peterson than Benson, but you're right. That being said, trading up to get him isn't worst idea. It just doesn't make sense for a team like Dallas who already has a proven guy at that position. Maybe if it were the Texans or Lions or somebody with a glaring need at RB, this would make more sense.

Agree with you on that one. We have two running backs here. Deal Jones, not Barber.

You think McFadden is more like Peterson based on his measurables... but you really have no idea until he steps into a NFL game, playing against NFL talent. I tell you what, I know for a fact the defenses in the NFC East are way better than the SEC!

The college career Benson had cannot be understated...it just did not translate to the NFL.

Never was impressed with Benson, even in college. OU fan here and they shut down the big dog every time he hit the field. Peterson made him look like an altar boy. Benson sucks, always has. McFadden is three times as talented as Benson will ever be.

Jones is a free agent you idoit! That means his contract is has expired with the Cowboys and they can't trade a person who no longer plays for them.
It is a gamble to trade Barber but it is also a gamble to keep him, he has a punishing running style that could cause big injuries early in his career. It will also cost Dallas a crap ton of money to keep Barber because he is a restricted free agent and if Dallas doesnt match an offer sheet from another team then they are left with their thumbs up their ass.
Name a running back that runs like him that played late into his career.

True.... But you got to hope for the best for these athletes..

----

I'd love to see more trades on draft day.

this isnt going to happen. i have heard of dallas gettin mcfadden. but never at the price of barber. dolphins will trade there #1 pick . but they arent trying to get a running back they already have ronnie brown and are bringing ricky williams back. so they got plenty of depth there. it has been said that the dolphins are willing to make some trades for dallas' patrick crayton and bobby carpenter which are parcells favorites. but barber stays in dallas , cowboys keep there two first round picks and gain some more for either carpenter or crayton or both

Yeah.......it wouldn't hurt my feeling if both Crayton and Carpenter leave here. Miami is loaded with running backs and they need the defensive help that Dorsey would give them. Now, I could see working a trade for Dorsey and adding him to the defensive line. Who knows?

A great running game can make a defense look stellar! Ask Jacksonville.

The Dolphins are rebuilding and Barber would be a better brick to add than Dorsey. Plus, they can trade completely out of the first round using the picks from Dallas and bring in some veterans or establishing young players via trade. Not to mention, they have the cap room to go after a big free agent especially if they dont have to pay a first round x-amount of millions in guarantees.

Here the deal...under the point system allocated for draft picks their would be no way the Cowboys could pull off a trade for the top pick by merely offering their 2 (high) 1st round picks (#22 and 28).

Under the current draft order points system if the Cowboys offered their 2 first rounders, they would still be 1500+ point short! The 1st overall pick is worth 3000 point and the Cowboys 2 first round picks are only worth 780 and 660 points respectively. The Dolphins would definitely consider the value of Barber to make up the difference.

Barber is a restricted free agent, so the Cowboys need to make a decision on him anyways and it is definitely not beyond Jerry Jones to decide McFaddens upside far exceeds Barbers thus making Barber expendable to get McFadden.

Sorry, it is a business move, and that is how Jones will see it.

barber is stayin my man sorry

I could care less if he stays or goes...it would not be my problem....i am just the messenger.

yeah but you must be a miami fan cuz you are all for it . cant blame you i would want barber too. just sayin your source aint to good if you think barber is leavin . jerry jones has said he would like to bring in mcfadden if possible but would want the 1 2 punch of barber and mcfadden . cuz we all know its a two running back league now

No, Cowboys, he's a Philly fan.

That's right which makes me even more apathetic...McFadden, Barber, Julius Jones, Ronald McDonald, makes me no difference. No are better than Westbrook!

Barber has more of upside and is equal to Westbrook now

The eagles suck as well as yourself you cocksmoking pile of eagle crap!! Win a super bowl then come here talking your shit!!!

Wow, that was harsh...i never smoked before in my life!! And eagle crap is a delectable in some countries!!

oh and by the way, you came here...this is my posting

I see it this way. Jones will fill as many needs as posible with free agents like he always does or at least tries to do. If they pick up a WR, CB, and any other main need that why, going after McFadden would be the right thing to do.

You also have to consider the salary cap! The top pick will demand the type of money top tier Free Agents will, and in some cases more which can strangle a teams cap space! They will NOT be able to make big free agency splashed and pay McFadden $35 mil in guarantee! The Cowboys do not have that much cap room.

I think that was my point when I mentioned the Deion Sanders contract a few years back. Is Dallas going to mortgage their whole future for one player? Guess we'll find out. We did it back in the late 80's with Herschel Walker being traded to Minnesota and built a whole Super Bowl team around it. But, that was before the salary cap. Will be interesting to see what kind of deal comes up. Jones is building a new stadium and I'm sure that he wants to keep it filled up, so he needs to weigh any kind of a trade against the possibility of alienating his fan base.

Can you say New Orleans and Ricky Williams...

Yes, but Ricky Williams is a dope-smoking head case. McFadden has his shit more together than Ricky ever will.

I'm not liking this move if it happens. When Jerry gets a thought in his head, nobody's gonna change his mind.

Yeah......let's hope it's just a rumor. I can't see it happening without risking the immediate future of the whole franchise.

I've been talking to McFadden's agent hyping up the trade behind the scene's in Dallas. Jerry's not half bad when he's not coaching on the sidelines late in a game or in a Pepsi commercial....By the way that play; 7 back 6red aaaahahhhhh, I think they ran that against the eagles in big D.

Hey, man. You better be worried about improving upon that record up there before you stick your nose in Dallas' business.

How do you think our records going to get better?

Eagles are one good receiver from going to the Super Bowl, right? That's all I have been hearing for two months now. Get him and run. That should be instant Super Bowl.

If you say so! You never heard that from me. I could go on and on and on about the damn problems and coulda shoulda woulda's

Yeah......I hear ya. Been seeing it from virtually everyone else that is a Philly fan. Will be fun watching the draft and trades to see how things turn out. I'm sure there will be plenty of surprises.

McFadden to Dallas...Thats my new montra

DO IT JERRY,DO IT JERRY, DO IT JERRY, DO IT JERRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey.....if he can work a deal with him coming here and improving the team without giving away the farm, I am all for it. We can speculate all we want. Just have to wait and see what happens. None of us would be worth a shit as a G.M., would we?
