What the Eagles should do this off season...a great read if you want to take the time to read

Alright, after putting in much thought, I have finally put out a real blueprint for the Eagles offseason for 2008.

Offense

Right away when we think about the offense, we think about getting a big time receiver for Donovan to work with. I mean, come one, the last time the Eagles had a REAL receiver, we went to the Superbowl, and had a chance to come home with a championship. What should we do?

1. First thing we need is a big time receiver. Sorry Eagles Front Office, another number 2/3 receiver just wont cut it here. Stallworth is nice and all, but is a huge injury risk, as he is ALWAYS injured. Also, if we had him as a number 2 option, imagine what we could do, so let us move on to what we need in that number 1 slot. As i have stated in my article earlier this week, the potential receivers that seem practical to get, that are NOT named Chad Johnson, are Javon Walker, Randy Moss, Torry Holt, and Larry Fitzgerald. Yes I am shooting down the idea of Chad in midnight green because his team is NOT trading him, and we definitely do not want T.O. junior on our team. Now let's start with Javon walker. Prior to the injuries, he was a dynamic receiver who worked the field really well. He had a great season prior to tearing his knee up, then went to the Broncos and in his first year there, tore it up yet again. The problem is, the injuries to his knees are a little much, and ones I do not think he can really recover from completely. I do not think he is worth the risk for the Eagles to go after, so let us just put him aside. I mean come on, knee reconstruction, and then micro-fracture surgery (which is a potential career ender there because most players don't end up the same after). Now, let us move on to Larry Fitzgerald. He said it himself that he would not mind playing for the Eagles. Great! One problem though....he KINDA said the same thing about a handful of other teams, so we do not know if the REAL desire is there for him to play as an eagle. Number 2, as must as he is a top receiver in this league, I think a lot of his success comes from playing across from Anquan Boldin, who i think is much better because he is a more physical receiver, and is great with yards after the catch. After pointing all these out, I really don't think it is practical to pick up the hefty pricetag that comes with him. The next receiver I have named is Randy Moss. What can I say, he is a true freak of nature...a true TD machine. Someone who could stretch the field, someone with blinding speed, someone who clearly will add TDs to a team in dire need to score. I have a problem with Randy though. Number 1, I have the fear of him reverting back to old Randy, and I don't want anything to do with that. Number 2, he struggles when facing physical corners, and when bumped around, you saw what an elite corner like Lito did to him. Last, I really can't see the Pats letting him go. Brady is lobbying for him to stay, so there is NO way that the Patriots front office will let him go. On to the last number 1 we have listed, Torry Holt. Now here is a real great player. Someone who is great off the field, and on the field. Someone who does not come with the diva attitude that most receivers come with. Someone who is Mr. Consistent, Posting up several 1100+ yard seasons in a row, and being only 33, has a handful more years left to play at an elite level. Now many people have cried out saying that there is no way St. Louis would trade him, or he is too old, or his production will go down. Come on people! First off, he is ONLY 33, and still has a couple of years left in the tank to play at a really high level. Number 2, he is great friends with McNabb, so he would definitely have a desire to play here, on top of him having the greatest chance to win a superbowl again. Number 3, he put up 1180 yards with the crapshack situation the rams had at offensive line. It's truly amazing to think that a receiver could do so much still with Bulger spending most of his time admiring the sky from his green, grassy seat. Lastly, many people believe that there is no way St. Louis would give up an elite player like Holt just like that. This is absolutely wrong. I can give you a situation which would work perfectly:

Offer St. Louis a 2nd round pick, Darren Howard, and Sean Consodine (yes they are in dire need of defensive help) for Torry Holt

2. Now the second thing the eagles need to do on offense is pick up a real number 2 receivers, as i cannot look at Reggie Brown with a straight face anymore when the word starter is put by his name. Possible receivers the Eagles can go after: Donte Stallworth (he knows the offense, and has blinding speed. He can stretch the field as Curtis works the slot and Holt does his thing on the other side), Jerry Porter, D.J. Hackett, or even Javon Walker (as he would be very cheap, and we could sign him to a 1 year deal...he would be very willing to do so because he wants to prove himself to everyone that he can still play after the major injuries that he had)

Defense

1. Get Rid of Mcdougle, and keep Kearse. I know everyone wants to just give up on Kearse, but i really believe that he is coming back with a HUGE chip on his shoulder. We saw signs of what we originally signed up for in the beginning of the '06 season, before he got injured. Then in '07, he started off pretty great, but complications with his knee kept him from finishing off the season at starter. This is alright, as it takes a year and a half to 2 years usually to COMPLETELY recover from a major knee injury like he had. I think he will come out strong in '08, and give Trent Cole the help he really needs. Our starters at defensive would be: Kearse and Cole. Our backups would be: Abiamiri, Jaqua Thomas, and a young player that we can pick up in the draft or someone from free agency.

2. Pick up good depth for defensive tackle. Bunkley will be even more of a beast this year, and Patterson should continue to play at the high level he did all year last year. Monte Reagor was a disappointment, but should be better next year (hopefully). Behind them, we really don't have anyone. Kimo Von Olenhoffen was a HUGE disappointment, and seems like he wont join the Eagles the next season. The draft or free agency should help here (mainly the draft)

3. Pick up Trufant or Asante Samuel in free agency. I think Trufant is the better choice because he doesn't come with the 10 million dollar a year price tag that Samuels does. Also, if he starts along side an elite CB like Lito, he should be even better than last year, where he played great. As for Samuels, I really think he is not as good as everyone says or it seems. His numbers went down, even though they were still good, but I think he only made the pro bowl this year because of his '06 performance rather than his '07 performance. Also, a really good corner with height and speed should be good in the draft to pick up. Move Sheldon Brown to Nickel, as I believe he would excel in that position, and would play even better than in years past.

4. Start Q. Mikell along side B. Dawkins. Pick up a young safety to groom in the draft.

Special Teams

Plain and simple, we should either go after Deshawn Jackson, or go after a defensive back who can also double up as a KR/PR. I'm sorry but Reno Mahe just isn't the spark that we need.

I hope the Eagles have a great off season, and end up in Tampa next season. Please leave comments people, and thank you so much for putting the time in to read my article.

WR & punt returner-needed!- i def. don't want stallworth back, he didn't do much when he was here...but that's just my opinion. u r right-it needs to be 1st class all the way stop the MADNESS tubby !!

excellent points made & I HOPE they read the stuff ppl. write on here........:)

Torry Holt WAS upset with the coaching staff towards the end of the year. Hmmm that would be sweet....I would even consider throwing Crumpler in there ..he knows the offense and he scores touchdowns.......send Schobel packing.....add Jevon Walker and Samuel, a healthy Kearse. Draft about 3 Dbacks and a punt returner. I would also like to see a Dt added throgh draft and Free agency...maybe Saun Rogers or Coleman from ATL.

we dont need crumpler, LJ will be back to form, and with LJ being here, Celek will be good too...Javon Walker is tooooo much of an injury risk....Shaun Rogers is not a free agent...Detroit might cut him or trade him thats all...but yes it would be pretty sweet to have him, but he might cost a bit, and he is over rated...and honestly i like our guys here...but if hes alright with playing as a number 3 guy, i dont mind at all adding him...In the draft we should do 1. WR/KR/PR (Desean Jackson) 2. DB 3. DT

wow, you dont want Chad you'd rather have Moss, what makes you think he'll be a team player. He'll just be like he was on the Raiders, he doesn't like any other QB than Brady so fuck him. And also, getting Anquan would be the best idea. He could be in the top 5 WRs in the league. Getting Chad would help our other wideouts grow, nd it is hard to say if Anquan brings the same teaching abilities as Chad. Chad is definitely an H.O.F., but he just needs a better QB a la McNabb, and a defense that doesn't let the Browns score like 80 points, Dream scenario is Anquan and Chad. But iono if the FO can prduce, im jus saying if the pats could do it then so can any othe team, not us were run by cheap asses

i said in my article PrincedePhila that we prob wont get moss for that reason. I don't want moss honestly. As for Chad, he will be fun to have around at first, but hes too much of a diva, and is turning into a T.O. junior right now. He is going to turn into another T.O. and I really don't want that in our locker room. As for needing a better QB, are you serious? Carson Palmer is one of the best QBs in the league, easily in the top 5. Chad would be a beast here as he is there, but his production will probably drop off a little being that our receiver corps is definitely not anywhere close to what Cincinatti has. Cinci has Houshmandzadeh and Chris Henry behind Chad, definitely putting weight off of Chad. We aren't getting Anquan either, I never said we were cause thing is, Arizona won't let him go. We don't want Fitzgerald because he costs wayyyy too much, and Anquan makes him way better than he really is. Fitzgerald is just not physical enough of a receiver.

Wide Reiver! I have been preaching that all season. Any wr you named would be good. I personally still want Ocho to come to Philly but Sad to say He's the next T.O. Team Oblisorater but dont get me wrong he is still my favorite WR. We definatly need to improve our Wr corps in either the free agency, draft,or trade. Draft wise I was really really high on Malcolm Kelly but I dont he is who we need we need a guy who can improve at other things such as KR/PR So now I am high on Desean Jackson. Kelly is good I wouldnt care if we draftd him but Jackson would be very useful. I agree we need a DB we could rearrange positions and sign a few people [Trufant or Samuals] So S.Brown could move to Nickel or Safety. DT we need depth thats all. DE we need a LE to reinforce The Freak.Get rid of Mcdougle I dont care what you do with him you can take him to a back alley and mug him for all I care. Howard I actually dont have a problem with him but he was a dissapointment this year I gotta admit. We need to draft someone in either 2nd or 3rd round. Assuming we take Jackson in the 1st round [I hope we do]. I gonna hold my breath and see what Reid does cause he's a good coach but I hardly ever agree with his offseason choices

What is sad though is that I have a feeling that Reid will take yet another fat man in the first round, as he always loves to do haha

Yep Sad aint it Like I said I like the coach but He not good at draft day in my opinion Ol is strong this year wait tiill 2nd or 3rd

Yes, he's terrible at drafting.

Quick, how many starters do we have on offense that Reid didn't draft. Answer: three, Runyan, Curtis, and Tra Thomas (drafted by Ray Rhodes). However, signing Runyan was Reid's first ever move with the Eagles.

Again, quick, how many starters do we have on defense that Reid didn't draft (or sign as an undrafted free agent). Answer: two, maybe (Juqua Thomas, and thats only if Abiamiri doesn't beat him out and Takeo Spikes and probalby only for another year when our starting LBs will be Gocong, Bradley, and Gaither).

So, if you're a fan of the Eagles, you have to like Reid's drafts. He's found like 20 starters - good enough to take the team to 4 NFC Championship games and 1 Super Bowl.

I just want to thank everyone for taking the time to read my article here...yes it is long so your time taken is much more appreciated...please keep the comments coming, i would love to see what everyone else thinks

Our DT's are a special combo. Just adding some depth is all that is needed. Since we are soo deep at LB move Gocong to DE opposite Cole just in case the freak is not ready. Gocong is a Natural at that position.

Gocong is Mike Mamula at DE. Leave him at LB. He played great at the end of last year, especially against the run, which is where teams absolutely killed Dhani Jones.

Good Post.Makes too much sense for our front office, though. If we could get TH for that trade,I'm all for it!

First off I wanna say that I really liked the article and I agree with probably 90% of it. Tory holt would be sweet, but im sorry, 32 or 33 IS pretty old, lets get fitz, i know he wants money but screw it, we want a championship, hes a burner and hes young, I totally disagree with the jevon kearse comments, plain and simple jevon's a bum and he needs to leave so we can free up some cap room, next I agree with what you said about our d-line and secondary. Although I'd like Asante in here. Trufant would be sick too. As far as the draft goes, I'd love to get freddy davis as well as desean jackson or limas sweed, also love to get an awesome offensive tackle which, DONT BE SURPRISED IF THATS WHAT THE GO AFTER IN THE FIRST ROUND THIS YEAR!!!!! Next, I disagree with ur comments on Reggie Brown, yes, ur right, hes not a number one, but the kids got talent and i believe he will get much better as he grows, however, I could see us trading him for an awesome receiver from somewhere. Sean considine sucks, quinten mikell is the second coming of dawk, i **cking love mikell, sheldon needs to take over for dawk when he leaves, again, get trufant or asante( who's the man by the way) and keep lito. Also, give westbrook more money!!!!!!!

Sheldon won't be the safety...im telling you that right now....Sheldon would be the sickest nickel corner trust me....Imagine this for a secondary: Dawk and Mikell, Lito, Trufant/Samuel, Sheldon Brown...tell me that isnt just plain sick....this year is our year people, i think on defense the Front office will get things done...its the offense im worried about...i just hope they give more help for donovan....and i mean real help...dont give up on lj, he is one of the best tightends in the league when healthy....so leave him be...after he is finished here celek should be fully developed (we just need him to get good at run/pass blocking like lj is)

so you dont think we should draft freddy davis? dude...freddy davis and celek would be sweet, not a huge fan of l.j. anymore, not because of this season i know he was hurt, lotta reasons, one for example would be that dropped pass in the playoffs two years ago against the saints, anyway, i think what u said about sheldon is intersting, your probably right, love to have lance briggs or jared allen, i know it wont happen, love to have that dansby dude from arizona, lavreneous coles has just become an option aparently, what do you think about that? donovans gonna have a breakout year unlike any other, you watch, sorry for all the random thoughts, football just gets me so goddam excited

jared allen will be tagged i know that, as for lance briggs we dont need him...it would be nice to maybe have him though and try moving gocong to his natural position...but i dont think the eagles will make too much a spash on defense in free agency...mainly because our defense wasnt the problem...overall our defense was excellent...we will get better play at defensive end because kearse will be back and abiamiri will have a greater role..also at linebacker, we have a pretty great, deep, young corps...secondary is the real place where i think we need help...there and depth with defensive tackle....but ya you shouldn't give up on lj..just cause of one dropped pass? when hes healthy hes clearly one of the best tightends in the league, and a force in the redzone...thing is with rookies you are looking at raw talent and potential...and all you get are either great catching ability or great pass/run blocking skills...and the one which isnt well polished is worked on when you come to the nfl....lj is able to catch the ball well...and his run/pass blocking is just so under rated....he is excellent there

We got a great secondary without samuel or trufant if we get either well have the best in the league as if we havent won that title like 8 years in a row lol, Carsons aite, butr hes not elite, MCNABB is. period. McNabb is that guy in Hawaii who everyone is like why doesnt he get a receiver, why doesn't philly appreciate him, but Mr. McNabb should know that the brothers of philly hav his back iono bout the whiteys i kno its off topic, but u guys r hatin on cha dthe same way, get samuel and johnson and its lombardi time. THATS IT. BTW mikell aint that good J.R. Reed could be a monster, give him a chance give the young players a changce escpecially avant and greg lewis and juqua thomas

You have a lot of good points Prince, but please don't make this racial. We are united Eagles fans no matter what the color. As far as I'm concerned we're all green. On behalf of " Whiteys"- I love 5 and CJ is a great player but you know for sure our FO can't handle a player like him and won't. It's sad but true.Totally agree on JR Reed. I feel he was the Unsung Hero of the 2nd half of the season. And they should give him a chance.

right, I forgot to add that. There's no place for racial differences in football. And shame on you for bringing that stuff up on a board where all the comments (even the dumb ones) have stayed on topic

$14-15 Million dollars. Thats after we release Kearse and Howard. How do you suppose we'll get Asante and CJ, or as you've said in some of your other posts - Boldin and CJ, or Fitz and CJ, or Fitz and Asante.

You do realize that if for some strange reason, we got those two guys (any of those combos) to take 7.5 mil each (which in itself wouldnt happen) then we'd have no money to do anything with. We'd have to forfeit our draft picks because there wouldn't be any money to pay them. We wouldn't be able to pay Westbrook, we wouldn't be able to add depth at DT, or Safety (and stop with the Sheldon Brown to safety junk. If that happens, it wont be for another few years, for the last 5 or so years of his career, like Rod Woodson, Rodney Harrison, Ronnie Lott (all former CBs). This wouldn't have anything to do with the Eagles not being willing to spend any more money. It would be because they would have hit the salary cap and would not be ALLOWED to spend any more money

Stop with the ridiculous comments like, "The eagles spend no money" or "we should get this guy and that guy." You realize that most of the guys you mention are under contract with other teams right?

I think we need help on the defensive line, pr/kr, wide receiver. One more good player in each of these positions, and it will all fall into place. The most pressing need is defensive line. We need a pass rushing, run stopping defensive end. We could get that by trading up in the draft and getting Chris Long (we have around 12 picks). I would go after Fitzgerald hard, and I would rely on the draft for top level pr/kr. The season was crippled last year with the Dallas trade on draft day.

solid article. i think holt is a bit old id rather see roy williams, or fitz if he'll renegotiate his contract. i think walker and/or berrian or jerry porter would be great too. i trust the front O will take care of us this year. good luck to all of us. i like our D and we need a KR/PR.... eddie drummond is a free agent!!!

eddie drummond is still alive! Awesome! He's got to be 50 years old by now right? It sure seems like he's been around forever.

Plus, seeing his name makes me think of Robert Drummond. That dude could return kicks also. I wonder if they're related. If you're an Eagles fan, you should know who he is. If you don't, then smack yourself two times.

If Larry Fitzgerald would rework his contract, I believe he is the best option, because 1. he is 24, and 2. he is easily in the top 5 receivers in the nfl. Torry Holt still has a couple of years in him though. I don't want Eddie Drummond though. We didn't sign him when he was a Free Agent last year, and all that ended up happening was him signing elsewhere. What happened then? He fumbled a few kickoffs/punts. I honestly believe our best option is finding an explosive return man who isn't just taking up a roster spot as a return specialist. We need either a WR (Deshawn Stevenson anyone?), or a corner who can double up as a return specialist.

Its DeSean Jackson, not Deshawn Stevenson. Stevenson plays for the Orlando Magic (or at least he did, not sure if he's still there).

I'm positive that Fitz will rework his contract. For the two reasons you said: 1) he's 24 and 2) he's easily in the top 5 receivers in the NFL (although I dont know for sure about that, top 10 though, definitely)

However, if he's reworking his contract, its for a raise, not a paycut. After all, 1) he's only 24 and 2) he's easily one of the best receivers in the game.

You're article was good by the way. I dont necessarily agree with all of it, but you back up your points and its well written.

I think we would be better off drafting a big fast WR and bringing in a good no 2 ( Like Bernard Berrian or Donte Stallworth). The rooky might not be great this year but would benifit from the experiance of the second receiver. The biggest problem with most of the receivers mentioned so far is the price tag, Randy Moss in particular. Moss also has the potential to be another TO. If you insist on bringing in a no 1 though what about Mushin Muhammad now that the Bears have released him. As far as the defence is concerned I think they are where they need to be. I do suggest drafting a solid safety to eventually replace Dawkins, I think he has a few more seasons in him but it doesn't hurt to be prepared, he wouldn't be the first player to sudenly decide to retire while he was still at the top of his game, if he up and retired next year.

First off, let me thank you RIPAndreWaters for your compliment. I will be writing a new article soon, and an updated one, with all the new receivers and other playmakers that are talked about that the eagles are interested in. Waymond, for the number 2 receivers, I believe Berrian isn't the answer. I think Donte Stallworth is much better and he knows the system. There is one problem with him though....he is gonna cost a little too much coin now. Jerry Porter might be a perfect number 2. Let's remember folks, when he had a real qb throwing to him, he was just such a beast.....then after the superbowl season....enough said...One receiver I believe might be perfect would be D.J. Hackett. He is a really good receiver who seemed to have sure hands, and when he was healthy and given a chance, he was a monster. Team him up with a real number 1, and have Curtis working the middle...I think we could have a real potent offensive attack again. The better thing about Hackett is that he is not a big name, and the price tag that comes with him reflects that. He will be cheap....especially now that the eagles will only have 12 million to spend in free agency (it will definitely be more because we haven't made our cuts yet...I think something might be done with Darren Howard...and for some reason i have a feeling that Kearse might or might not be here...who knows)....

i'd like to have dj hackett as long as it wasnt for the number one spot, and whats the deal with avant baskett and g-lew? does everyone think those three will be eagles next year? even if we dont pursue a FA or go for a no.1 in the draft?

I like Avant and Baskett. Baskett has all the tools to be a really good receiver, and is a GREAT run blocker at the same time. I love Avant too, and I truly believe we haven't seen everything from him yet. G-Lew? I gave up on him a long time ago. For some reason in the draft, I think we will go after a defensive player such as a Sendrick Ellis (i think i said his name right). He is a beast, and he is perfect fit for the 4-3 system. I think we will get 2 or 3 players from free agency. Corner back, though, won't be one of them i think. I really liked Trufant, but hes tagged. Samuel is great, but will cost way too much, so i think adding a little depth should be just fine. I have faith in Lito and Sheldon, but we need a good nickel corner (draft or FA). Also, Coleman from Atlanta, I think the eagles should really take a look at him. He may be worth the risk. When healthy he can be good for about 8 sacks in a year....which is great for a D tackle. He is a great player to use to attack that A gap, and he does it real well.

aright aright we all fans but talkin aint gonna get us nowhere i wish we had two first rounders imagine kelly and phillips and cromartie 2nd there are some sites tht have completed the draft for phillty the pivcks look good

dont give up on greg he scored twice on pats hmmm ur right he does suck rite usse ur head

lol just cause he scored twice on pats doesnt mean anything. What has he done for us over the last few years. Look at his production, and it is so funny how you look at those tds and not look at what bad he has done for us. Remember he screwed up a return in our first game against the packers that caused a td....Pats were interested in him, i say we give him to them for some draft picks or something. If not, I say unload him and free up some cap space. Package Reggie Brown into a trade, drop Greg Lewis, we will still have Avant, Baskett and Curtis, and we can pick up a number 2 guy in free agency or the draft. How many receivers do you guys really want? 5 is the number, and if we get that 5th one in the draft a la Deshaun Jackson, it will save us a roster spot for a more important position, rather than whole a whole roster spot for a return specialist.

And please people, if you like the article, please give me good feed back by giving it a thumbs up right above the comment section on the right side next to the meter.

They dont need to get rid of mcdougle, just hope he gets shot again......

how can you hope someone gets shot...ya just dump mcdougle, howard, and kearse (they are now)
