One timeline for a Bucs and Jets deal for Darrelle Revis to get done has been the NFL Draft on April 25th. More signs and more reports are beginning to point that way. Over the weekend, Tampa Tribune’s Roy Cummings wrote that he expects the talks between New York and Tampa Bay to pick back up: Talk of a Revis trade to the Bucs has cooled to a simmer, but it will heat up again as the draft approaches, and so might the Bucs’ interest in dealing their 2013 first-round pick for the Jets cornerback. The Bucs are holding on tight to that 13th overall selection, in part because it’s too soon to know how this year’s draft will play out — even at the top — and what it could bring them. And that’s wise. To follow up with Cumming’s take, SI’s Peter King writes why he sees the Revis trade as inevitable: The Jets are in deep think mode over the possible trade of the rehabbing Darrelle Revis. And though it’s certainly tough to consider trading the best player on your team — and it’s a deal I wouldn’t do; I would pay the man — I think at the end of the day the Jets will do it at least two days before the start of the April 25 first round. (Can’t be on draft day, obviously, because the Bucs will need to do a thorough physical exam before agreeing to the deal, which is likely to contain one 2013 draft choice.) Both are very respectable theories and both make good points. But what both theories say at the same time is that no one truly knows what will happen. I do, however, agree with King’s take. For the trade to go down on draft day is a gamble the Buccaneers may not want to take. Not just for the reasons stated above (the physical and it’s outcome), but also for the fact that the Bucs may trade down from 13 and the Jets are no longer interested. Theoretically of course. Bottom line, this “deal” has dragged on and the Bucs have already shown they will wait as long as they need to by continuing to sign low-budget free agents and bypass the bigger names. The ball is in New York’s court to accept the deal that Tampa Bay has offered. Whatever deal that may be.
