Patriots guard Logan Mankins has not shown up to training camp, continuing a stance that he began when he didn’t sign his restricted free agent tender in the spring. So, Mankins is still not under contract, meaning he’s given up at least the $3.3 million tender that was offered to him.
In short, barring a trade and/or renegotiation Mankins is now scheduled to make zero dollars for the 2010 season. That reality has led some to believe he’ll eventually show up or agree to the Patriots’ original offer made in May.
Yet, while doing some reporting for this story in today’s Boston Herald, I learned two interesting facts about the Pro Bowl guard:
– Mankins does not spend any money, friends say. He has few expenses, a self-sustaining ranch that is paid for, and little else. While some athletes spend wildly, Mankins is financially secure.
