Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is perhaps the most violent runner in the game today. A unique combination of speed and strength, Peterson has been known throughout his career for running over defenders and then separating from the rest of the defense when he turns on the blazers. But as we all know, the NFL has now outlawed runners in the open field from using the crown of their helmet on defenders. A rule change that for the more physical runners, will be a big adjustment when the 2013 season opens. Peterson weighed in recently on all the changes in the game and let his feelings be known very clearly. Per KFAN:  “Sooner or later we’re going to be playing touch football,” said Peterson. “That’s just the passion in me that said that and then the maturity in me said, you know what, it’s an okay rule because it protects players.” “The one thing I do not like about the rule is they single it out towards running backs,” Peterson said. “From my point of view, when you’re looking at the defense and there’s eleven guys coming at you. There’s so many times that guys have came at me and lowered their helmet not with their facemask facing me. They just lowered their helmet and came in and dived at me, my legs and my knees.” “I’ll be more comfortable with it if they just spread the love and bring that over to the defensive side and make sure when those guys come in to attack us, that they’ve got their head up and face mask showing as well,” Peterson said. “And anytime that they have their helmet down, they get flagged just like they are putting on us. I’ll be satisfied if they do it that way.” For what it is worth, the rule applies to defenders as well as offensive players so that should be something Peterson will be pleased about. The thing I am most interested in is seeing how this will be officiated in live game speed. I just think it will be near impossible to determine whether the crown of the helmet was used as opposed to just the shoulder.
