After a long wait for Chiefs fans, the 2013 season (well, preseason) has started and fans were finally able to see the new and improved Chiefs in action, as they played the New Orleans Saints on Friday night. The Andy Reid style offense was evident, but unfortunately wasn't able to produce enough to come out with the win. Alex Smith looked extraordinary, as he led the the Chiefs to an early 7-0 lead in the first series of the game. Going 7-8 with 68 yards, Smith had good control of the offense with a sense of confidence and leadership. Just what this team needs to turn things around this year. Jamaal Charles, who most likely won't be running the ball as much this year, (despite the fact that he is a running back) was the leading receiver with 27 yards on three catches. Although he will still be used heavily in the offense, it will be in a different form, something that the fans aren't used to seeing. The first team defense faired well in the first quarter as well, preventing New Orleans from scoring in the first quarter. Newly acquired cornerback Dunta Robinson and Sean Smith performed well against the pass, something they will need to do when the Chiefs play Denver twice in three weeks near the end of the season.No. 1 overall draft pick Eric Fisher was a stud on the field, protecting Alex Smith like he was his own kid. Another notable performance was tight end Anthony Fasano, who came from the Miami Dolphins. I'm sure he's liking it much better in Kansas City so far. The fans are enjoying his company, that's for sure.As far as busts go, Vince Agnew and Jalil Brown may be unemployed soon. The Saints high powered offense picked on Agnew throughout the entire fourth quarter, as he allowed several passes for big gains, eventually giving up a touchdown late in the fourth. Jalil Brown, who saw some action on the field last season (as a backup) continued to underperform and agitate fans. Need I say more?Overall, the team looked pretty decent. Andy Reid has done a great job with the squad during training camp, and the improvement is showing. Work is still to be done, however I have much more confidence in this team than I did two months ago. Let's hope my confidence level doesn't drop any time soon.
