According to Matt Maiocca of csnbayarea.com, the San Francisco 49ers don't know if they are going to franchise safety Dashon Goldson for a second straight year.
Goldson, who badly wants to test the free agent market, may get his chance if the 49ers don’t dump Alex Smith. The 49ers have to either cut Smith or trade him in order to franchise tag Goldson. Smith’s salary puts the 49ers over the cap, but they can’t trade him until March 12th at 4:00pm.
They have until March 4th to tag Goldson; however, they both can’t be on the roster on March 12th.Â
Either San Francisco will dump Smith getting no value for him, but the ability to tag Goldson. Vice versa, keep Smith and let Goldson walk.
