5 NFC Championship games. 1 Super Bowl appearance. 6 NFC East titles and 1 NFC Championship. 129 wins, 86 losses and 1 dreadful tie. The greatest era of Eagles football ever. It’s a record that most NFL coaches would kill for. In Philadelphia, it’s about to cost a man his job. This is a bitter end. Not the one that Andy Reid deserved. You can say what you want about the man, but he gave his heart and soul to Philadelphia and the ending to the Andy Reid era is just becoming sad. Don’t mistake my sympathy for support. It’s time for the Eagles to move on from Andy Reid. For his sake. For theirs. And for the good of a city of fans. It wasn’t supposed to end like this though. It was supposed to end with that elusive championship and a parade down Broad St. It wasn’t supposed to end with a talented team that lacks the fundamentals and apparently the heart that have been hallmarks of teams coached by Reid. They lack the discipline to win too. That is not to exonerate Reid from his hand in all of this. He is the one, after all, that has final say in personnel moves. He is the one who has the burden of having his team ready to play and of putting them in the best position to win. He hasn’t done those things. And truth be told, this team has been in decline since 2008. The team didn’t play well at the beginning of ’08 but put a good second half together and parlayed that into a run to the NFC Championship game, where they were outplayed by a team that they whooped on only a few weeks before. Since that loss to the Arizona Cardinals, it has been a slow and steady decline. Only 2010, when Michael Vick realized how to effectively play the quarterback position for 6 games, offered any hope. The record will show that 2010 was the last time the Eagles made the playoffs and won the NFC East under Andy Reid. The record will also show that a man who brought so much optimism and presided over an amazingly successful 14 year run, came up short in the end. I’ll never believe it was for lack of trying on his part. I’ll always respect Andy Reid for what he did for football in Philadelphia. It was very exciting in the early days and it was a lot of fun. A 38-23 loss to the dreadful Cowboys has all but sealed his fate. Even at his post game press conference, Reid seemed to lack the fire he usually has after a painful loss. He said the right words, but there seemed to be no emotion or conviction behind them. He still believes this team can turn it around. He still believes they are a playoff team. Unfortunately, Andy Reid is the only person left who believes that. And I’m not at all convinced that he truly believes that either. But if he quits on his team, he’d be just as bad as them. They quit on him weeks ago. It wasn’t supposed to end like this.
