Just when we thought the phrase, “NFL Lockout” wouldn’t be spoken for at least another 10 years, here it is again. Thank God that it doesn’t involve the possibility that the 2012 NFL season could be cancelled or shortened, but it isn’t good news. The NFL officials are the one’s who are now in a contract dispute with the NFL brass. The disagreement has to do with compensation, pension, and other benefits for the officials and it doesn’t look like anything will be resolved in the near future. According to reports from ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, the two sides have not spoken to each other for at least a month. With reports from the NFL that the current replacement officials have been scheduled to work the first game of the regular season, the two sides are getting farther and farther away from each other.

This is a bit of a problem. From watching any number of the preseason games, it’s apparent that there’s a big difference between the replacement officials and the NFL officials. The replacement officials are missing blatant calls and don’t act with the authority that they have been given. In a recent preseason game between the San Francisco 49ers and the San Diego Chargers, a 15 yd penalty was called for a intentional grounding but the penalty was never explained by the official. It’s understandable that these replacement officials are going to make some mistakes. It’s not their fault. They’ve been put into a tough situation by the NFL and the current NFL officials and the teams, players and fans are the one’s who are going to suffer. We can only hope that the two sides can come together in the next few weeks and iron out a deal.
