Even on their day off, the Jets are still making headlines. This time, news again came courtesy of cornerback (and BFF of Bill Belichick) Antonio Cromartie.

Cromartie, who — albeit scantly — is expected to double as a wide receiver this season, appeared on ESPN’s First Take Tuesday and gave himself some major props, saying he’s the Jets’ second-best wideout.

“I think I’d put myself as second,” Cromartie said, via ProFootballTalk.com. “I haven’t really played it in the past four or five years, but I can put myself as the second just with raw ability and talent going out there, I think, me separating and being a more physical guy out there on the outside.”

That is an acknowledgment to Santonio Holmes, the team’s (unofficial) $45 million mouthpiece. However, it doesn’t say much about the other guys — Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill, and Chaz Schilens.

“Kerley is a more of a slot receiver, he’s a slot guy,” Cromartie said. “Stephen Hill is a younger guy that can get down the field. I think, for me, I can run every single route in the route tree. I’m not going to take anything away from my ability, so when you ask me that question, I’m going to say, yes, I believe I’m one of the best receivers on the football team, next to Santonio Holmes.”

If you were to defend Cromartie’s point, you could say: Hill is a rookie with a lot to learn, Kerley has disappointed this offseason (Rex Ryan’s words), and Schilens, a free agent acquisition from the Raiders, simply cannot stay healthy.

But it’d also be easy to argue that Cromartie might have slighted his teammates with his high sense of self-worth. Not to mention there are other qualities that go into the playing position — blocking, beating press coverage, and field presence, to name a few — other than just running really fast in a straight line.

Giving him a few offensive snaps each game wouldn’t be a terrible idea; it’d keep defenses honest and help other players get open. However, to say he’s already No. 2 is putting the cart way in front of the horse.

Then again, with the Jets, it’s difficult to expect any less.
