Last week, as part of the buildup to the showdown between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, an outfit called Clear Channel Communications erected a billboard (above) in Lawrence, Mass. (and reportedly other locales as well throughout the Boston area), boldly predicting that the Ray Lewis Retirement Party was set to kick off shortly after the Ravens were vanquished at the conclusion of a victory by the Patriots on Sunday evening. Sadly for the folks who came up with the smack-talking billboard, “Ray’s Retirement Party” was not to be, rendering their countdown clock moot, not to mention something that could be looked upon as a bold prediction-turned-jinx by Patriots fans. Be that as it may, in response, billboards are being erected throughout Baltimore bearing a much different message. Zing. Well played. Lewis commented upon the original billboard following the AFC Championship game in typical Ray Lewis fashion by saying, “I was hurt when I saw a sign that actually said my retirement would [start] tonight. Man can’t dictate that. God dictates that.” Clear Channel owned up to its erroneous prediction on Monday with the following tweet: Welp. twitter.com/MassBillboards… — CCO_Boston (@MassBillboards) January 21, 2013 I suppose Clear Channel deserves at least some credit for that display of humility.
