Ronde Barber was not a vocal leader outsiders saw him as but players knew the type of leader he was around them. Now with him retired, someone else  on the defensive side of the ball has to assume that role. And that player is none other than Gerald McCoy. Barber spoke highly of the 2010 first rounder via the Tampa Tribune. It’s very clearly Gerald McCoy. Not only because he’s one of the best players on the team, but because he has the personality to handle it. A lot of people don’t give Gerald credit for the year he had last year, but the people that played against him did. And when you talk to a guy like John Lynch, who did a lot of games (as a Fox TV analyst), he’ll tell you. He’s talking to the other coaches all the time and asking them, ‘What is it with this (Bucs) team that you know you have to stop to beat them?’ And, without fail, they all said, ‘That freaking No.93 is heck to deal with.’ So, yeah, he’s the guy. Many saw McCoy slowly growing into that role on separate occasions last season. He went to his coaches during games to make some defensive adjustments as the game went on. You would see him on the sidelines talking to his teammates, making suggestions. And let’s not forget, he earned the captain’s patch for the 2012 season. Gerald McCoy is in good position to lead the team moving forward. As Barber details above, McCoy will have no issues handling the role.
